watched a couple laps of the STP race yesterday. Why anyone would actually watch that on TV is beyond me. I get the atmosphere thing--BBQ and beer with NASCAR in the background, but as a racing sport I think I'd shoot myself if I had to watch them go in circles for hours every week.
It's one of the "cookie cutter" tracks.
There are like five tracks that are essentially the exact or similar layouts, 1.5 mile tri oval, medium bank wide lane track
Kansas, California, Michigan, Las Vegas are examples of these tracks.
I rarely watch these races
I've been to the races here twice for the camping and atmosphere. Sitting in the stands and watching is exciting for a couple of laps..then it's a snooze fest.
My past experience with circle racing at the top level is it's a great background for a summer BBQ. You watch for a few minutes. Put together a betting pool for various things. Go drink and talk to friends...eat. Watch the last 10 laps.
Now local dirt track racing or the Outlaw series is a different animal. That can be exciting. Keep it short...keep it fast.

A scanner...
Having a scanner for NASCAR racing allows you to better understand what is going on with individual teams and gives you a better sense of what issues are affecting the race. Buying a scanner can be a daunting task, though. The feature lists runs on and on and if you have never owned a scanner before it can be difficult to tell what is important and what isn't.
Number Of Channels
How many do you need? Models with less than 100 channels are only recommended for occasional race fans as you can't have the whole field programmed in at the same time. 100 channels is really the minimum for the average fan. 200 channels (or more) are best for race fans who attend the entire race weekend. You can put the Cup cars in channels 1-100 and Nationwide cars in 101-200 by car number, and then you won't have to reprogram.
Available Bands
Another factor to be aware of is which frequency bands the scanner can reach. Many scanners can't pick up the 800Mhz channels. While the majority of race frequencies fall in the 450-470 Mhz range there are some drivers up in the 855Mhz band. If your scanner doesn't support the 800Mhz band then you simply won't be able to listen to those drivers.
Audio Modified
Some scanners will specifically state that they are "audio modified." This means that they have been altered to boost the volume. My personal scanner is not audio modified, and I don't believe that this is an important feature. If you are having a hard time hearing you should consider buying a higher-quality headset to better block the outside noise.

I've been to several, and have managed to stay awake through all of them.
you get solid gold stuff, from the likes of Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Tony Stewart.
I guess it truly is racing when you bank on passing someone who is a. either in the pits b. in the garage c. getting picked up by a crane d. or doesn't even make the field for lack of breaking the 100.7% rule.
F1 should start billing itself as "the best pit crews in the world" not "the best drivers" I mean Sebastian Vettel will even tell you he isn't the best driver in the world, that Sebastian Loeb is.
but if you wanna foot the bill for Austin, I'm more than willing to go...after-all we only need to go to qualifying to see who is going to win the race.

16 out of 24 drivers have scored pts., Sebastian Vettel has a 2 (TWO) race lead in the standings over 2nd place. and only 9/11 teams has scored pts.
when and where was the last F1 race you attended? lemme guess the 05' US Grand Prix, great race how many starters again? 5 or 6?
In fact, when all the Michelin cars pulled of the track after the formation lap, I turned off my TV.
I have to admit that some pretty lame rules have come and gone and come back again since I became a fan in the '70s, but it's still and always will be the pinnacle of motorsport.
Not a bad money laundering operation, either.
