ok, the virus thing just kicked into overdrive, I get on my computer, the background is changed to a spyware warning, as is the screensaver. Some virus remover popped up called advanced XP defender, but i'm afraid it's not affiliated with microsoft and is just another pop up and I'll end up downloading another virus. I've tried to D/L adware, but it asks me if I would like to pay $19.95 with credit or debit (thought it was supposed ot be free?) and spybot just freezes in the middle of the scan. I also tried to go back to an earlier date when the PC worked correctly, but I didn't know you had to save it at a time it worked correctly, so I can't bring it back before it got infected. Some of you said to just completely flush the system and re-load windows is the best idea. How do you do that? I think that'd be the best idea at this point.

With the exception of Spybot Search and Destroy (watch for fakes; there are lots out there with names that are close but aren't the real thing), almost nothing that's free actually works.
Most things which claim to be spy this or that are in reality spyware themselves and are there to fleece you of your money and to infect your computer.
Face it, by trying to do computing on a stolen/unlicensed computer, you are now paying the price.
The only sure way to get rid of your problem is to wipe the computer clean and install the operating system over again.
If you don't have the operating system disks, you're going to have to pay something. If you have the OS disks, you can do it with what you have, no cost.

If it's the same one I got on my laptop about 3 months ago...it's a bitch. I just replaced the HD. It does sound like that one. It would offer me a spyware to remove...download program and cost to use. Even by deleting it...it would regurgitate itself and spring back up.

backup your pics, docs and anything else.
wipe it and re-install winblows.
install a reputable virus scanner and spyware prog.

It's free.. you can just download and burn the .iso file to a cd or whatever... then reboot with the cd in.
There will be a selection for erasing HD's.
Basically it goes through and wipes absolutely EVERYTHING on your HD. It takes a while, but it's just basically emptying 100% of everything on there.
then, just reinstall windows and go. Or, if you want, ubuntu linux.

It's fairly intuitive and stock setup is very similar to a 'windows' type deal. A lot of things "just work" with it already, as it's setup to be very noob friendly. If you're using it to just surf the web and shit - you could do that all day with the out of the box setup ubuntu has.
Ubuntu costs nothing to get either - and there are programs available that are every bit as good as the microsoft programs... and they're all free too. Open Office, is essentially MS office in a different wrapping. All the same trimmings, but free!
I run ubuntu on an older desktop that I use for just surfing the web and some programming and shit. Just basic stupid stuff. The computer is pretty old and shitty, so I don't do any gaming or anything on it, just dumb every day stuff. I also run Ubuntu on my laptop
It's easy, and has tons of useful utilities on it. The HD wiping options are just some of them.
Scratch that - If you go to install ubuntu (which you'll need to burn to a cd :-P ) it should be able to format your HD for you on the setup I believe...
