White bass that is.

I grew up in Corpus and my youth was full of bay fishing, so I have never liked fresh water fishing at all, bores the hell out of me. Im especially bored by large mouth bass and all the hoopla about that kind of fishing spending all day chasing some elusive fish under a log or something. But I went with my best friend to his lake house over on Lake Limestone and fished for some white bass, and wow that is almost as fun as catching specks feeding under the gulls on the bay.

He has a small lakehouse and good pier out there with huge lights on a timer, and right now those whites are running in to spawn. Talk about a FIGHT. You will only have serious action at about 10:30pm til midnight, and then again at 4am til 5 so you dont get much sleep, but the fishing is incredible. They are feeding on shad and schooling heavy and you catch 2 fat females per cast and they almost break your pole. Reminds me of hooking a nice kingfish or dolphin offshore ! We limited out in less than an hour easily. Once this spawning is over, this kind of action wont happen again until next year.

You guys ever go after whites this time of year?

There is a lake S.W. of Atl. named West Point and I have fished for them at the mouth of the river that feeds it.
We were out there one day fishing among the locals who were not catching any.
My fishing buddy's neighbor had told him to use chicken liver (just like cat fishing). I thought his neighbor was pulling my buddy's leg but sure enough we loaded up on them.

We used to do that at Cedar creek when my Dad had a lake house there. Too much fun.

Once the spawn rush is over, as summer comes, go find a "Point" on the lake. If there is a sandy drop-off , off the point, you can slay them every afternoon on slabs.

Can I go peacock bass fishing for free, off the end of a private pier, with beer, food and accommodations only 75 feet way and limit out in 45 minutes or less?

Lake Nacimiento in central Cali is a great place for them, use to boil the water when they chased the Shad.

Yep, thats exactly what it looks like, just like specks in the bay feeding on skrimps.

We used lead-heads with black shad lure on, just like this only silvery-black in color.

Sweet! We have a 4 acre spring fed tank that will spoil you to lake fishing. I've been working so much when I get down there, my kid has all the fun. I need to start culling the blacks because they're all starting to be the same size. A couple of years ago, we harvested more, and were catching bigger ones. Today 5-6 lbs is about as big as we've seen.

We're about a mile south of town from where 831 & 542 split.

Those florida hybrids will ruin a stock tank, and fast. It did that to ours, and since our water level is so low, Im thinking of draining it and starting over with channel cat and perch only.

What are these "tanks" you guys are talking about?

Are they actual tanks? Like a gas tank (only huge)?

What are they made of, fiberglass, aluminum, stainless steal?

Sorry, I'm just being nosey, there's not much harvested around here except for corn and beans!

Stock tanks. Ponds, small lakes.
Originally dug to water livestock, and people figured they might as well raise fish to catch out of them.

That makes sense, but it's totally not what I expected!!Blush

I have a artesian(SP?, Bull spring 'round here) well that popped up in my back yard. I've been thinking about digging it out and throwing a few bluegill or crappie in..

I have some pics at home of this little spring and what it's doing to my yard. I'll post them up when I get home..

It might be awhile, It's a long walk home!Whistling

We had a lake management group do ours too in the early 80s, but not with big mouth bass. Those things eat A LOT of small bait fish and the big mouth allow them to go after larger stuff. Plus they have to eat a huge amount to just maintain their weight. The big mouth hybrids that we ended up having in there came from upstream during flood years, we didnt put 'em in there. I only want channel cat, bluegill and lots of fathead minnows. I used to put thousands of bait fish in yearly until the eco system balanced out.

Regarding fertilizer, we just put hay in there and when it rots it does wonder to clear up the water and when it rots it creates foodstuff for micro organisms in the eco system.

Its amazing how huge fish can get if they have a good supply of baitfish, shad and small perch can be like a steroid!

No kidding, but it is just wide spot in the road. They have the record for being the smallest high school in the state to have an 11 man football team, I think there were only 15 boys in the high school.Laughing

Funny shit about the cop, 1st one they hire, and he didn't make it 60 days. I never saw him, and I don't know how the hell you hide a cop in Oakwood.

Just saw your location on your avatar, Big Spring is way the hell out there. We used to do some hunting out there, and I always wanted to free ride some of those plateaus.

I got in some near trouble for glassing a game warden there one time. He was lookin' at us, so I looked at him, I had no idea who he was. I'm from places where there is no way you can watch me from that far. He was not impressed. Hell, he was in a 2 door Ford car of some kind, who takes anyone seriously in a 2 door Ford?

What he'll never know is, when he jumped, I was aiming at him with a 30.06. It would never made it at that angle, but 2 minutes before...I was holding something different...He never saw that one.
