Shift drum binding

I’m replacing a transmission in my 02 yz 250f and I can’t seem to get the shift drum to spin freely it will move a little at a time if you shake it all the parts in the transmission are new/used parts that came out of a perfectly good working bike but I am wondering if it is something wrong with the install or what, I’ve also inspected all shift forks and they seem to be fine and unbent

If I'm understanding it right, you're just trying to make sure it goes through all the gears before you button everything up, right? It's hard to get them to shift without spinning them a fair bit so what I've done (at least on a 2t) is leave the crank out and put the case halves together. Install just a couple case bolts. Put on the shift lingkage, shift shaft, shifter, pawl thingies and all that. Put the nut on the main shaft and spin it with your cordless and go through the gears. Yes, it will be turning in the opposite direction of engine rotation but should work for the purpose of checking how it shifts. Takes longer but for this rookie guy, it put my mind at ease.

Alright I’ll try that now I’m just skeptical of it because I had it apart for a crank and couldn’t seem to move then had a bunch of tranny issues like jumping into gears and out as well as the bike randomly hitting neutral

Update- I put the case halves together and it seemed to shift fairly easy I have almost everything installed except the head I am waiting on a new piston I’ll let everyone know how the first rides goes will probably be on Thursday!

You were likely just feeling the bind from the shift fork pins and trans shafts for that matter, not running perfectly square to one another. When the cases are together, all the shafts are perfectly parallel which would allow for things to slide in unison without binding.
