Hey guys,
Am looking to get my fork tubes re-anodised. Only want the outside done. Does anyone know an easy / suitable way of capping the ends of the fork tubes to prevent the inside being touched. Bearing in mind that it still needs to be connected to a wire carrying current.
I realise Ali plugs can be machined up with o-rings etc but thought someone who has done it before might have an easy solution.
cheers
I'm a machinist / shop owner, so my perspective is obviously to just spin up those plugs and get some quality Buna-N o-rings for a nice tight seal.
If I didn't have access to the machine tools, I would probably look into using some old fork caps in the top with the OEM O-rings and something to plug the clicker bore like a shoulder screw with a nice fat o-ring.
The threads on the shoulder screw can also be used by the anodizer as a hanging hook / grounding location.
On the seal end, you could technically just use a pair of oil seals with the garter springs removed.
I would want an aluminum wire clip instead of the steel clips that hold them in place.
Inside the seal, you could put a flanged plastic drain plug, before you push it into the tube.
If you try any of this hackery, consider fully degreasing all that crap with suspension clean, brake parts cleaner, etc. Then toss them in some boiling water for a few minutes to hopefully remove any remaining contaminants that could mess up the anodizing.
Typically when I've had mine done the shop doing the work seals them for us.
