Looking to do the jericho round this weekend. I've only done local hare scrambles and enduros, where markings are much more defined and you're doing the same loop over the entire race. So the blind racing over a longer distance will be a bit new.
Never ridden the area any suggestions or tips on finishing this type of race? The first loop is about 54 miles. I've calc my tank to get around 60-64 miles but thats not on the sandy dunes and higher speed stuff that we might be getting into. Trying to decide if I need to fuel up at the first fuel stop or if I can complete the first loop without stopping. I'm on a 22 KTM 450, stock tank(2.2g) and +1 on the front sprocket. I've got a semi fresh front tire and a new rear tire. Running mousse F/R as well.
What do people do for food just a quick gel at the gas stop?
Thanks
How fast are you? If you are A level(ish) and going to be on the gas a lot, I'd probably stop at the E-Gas just to be safe. You don't have to do a full fill up, just a quick gallon splash should be enough to get you to the main pit.
Don't stress on following the markings, being a National it will be well marked and unless you are fast as shit and running in the top 10 it will also be pretty burned in by the time you get there. However, do pay attention at the riders meeting to what the arrows/markings mean, since they have went to the KC66 Foundation method of marking it has been much safer and gives you good warning of upcoming dangers and sharp turns.
Have fun! The Jericho round is a BLAST!
I may regret this but my friends told me to sign up for A-vet....
If you have the XCF tank, you will be fine for 60 miles. Those bikes even with a Dante Oliveria or Taylor Robert on it in those conditions are good for 30 mpg, unless, and this is a big one, if you are running an aftermarket ECU like a Vortex that has been richened up considerably. When you start richening them up, you can loose mpg in a hurry. Now when you start getting to sustained 100 mph, you will drop in to the 20’ or high teens for mpg on those bikes. That’s been my experience building KTM 450’s and 500’ s for Baja.
A bucket list race for me was the Virginia City GP. I swept it as an EMT a couple of years then entered. I hadn't "raced" in at least 10/15 years so entered the novice class. Got tons of shit from all my buddy's for sandbagging. Guess they were right because I have the over forty first place trophy. Next year I got the 2nd place over fifty intermediate (or whatever). So I told them all there was one sandbagger. Bottom line, Have Fun, Ride Hard. Drink beer and BS after. Oh Ya HAVE FUN. YAHOO!!

You should be fine without fuel…but peace of mind in a race is priceless…so it’s better to stop than worry (in my opinion).
The trees is Jericho don’t move…so don’t clip a tree branch thinking it will bend…it won’t, it will put you on the ground though…(ask my how I know? lol)
The round hosted by the sugarloafers doesn’t usually race in much sand…they will usually run a high speed loop, and a loop in the single track in the trees (I have no first hand knowledge on the course this year…but every time I’ve raced it in the past…it’s been one wide open loop to the West, and then a loop in the trees/mountains to the north…the fast guys will usually average about 50-60mph on the fast loop)
The course will be well marked…and the trails are fairly well defined.
Even the technical stuff isn’t that technical…just more technical than the wide open loop.
Depending on where they do the start…you’ll want to walk it good…if it’s in the sagebrush, it’s usually shorter with a handful of lines everyone will be battling for…if they do it in the wide open flats (no sagebrush), just be mindful of g-outs cutting across the bomb-especially if it’s dusty. It can look flat and smooth, only to have a 4 foot deep, 15 foot wide wash come out of nowhere (ask my how I know? lol)
Of the two nationals out there, this is my favorite…course is more to my liking.
A good group of people are putting this race on…
have a blast!
Your fine with a stock tank.. last race I raced in Jericho was 99% sand.. but you can count on trees in a HHN..
Came here to say that exact same thing about the bomb, I couldn’t remember if sugarloafers was the dune start or sagebrush/ open field race. I believe me and my shoulder know about that exact same wash coming out of nowhere on that big open field.
Well I went and completed the race. I finished mid pack in my class which I am happy about. It was a super fun race and I think I will be returning for round 4 now. I fueled up at the emergency fuel stop, I am still not sure if I needed too but there was a lot of sand and whoops for the first 20ish miles.
Loved the format. 3+ hours of riding/racing is hard to do at most places/races I've been and to not repeat any trails/sections is incredible.
The weather was crazy with the snow on the 2nd loop but the dirt was pretty good in some of those sections. It looked like there were about 100 DNF.
10/10 would recommend.
Thanks for the info y'all
