Hi guys,

Put the decals on the front fender, looks rather cool. Soon be Christmas so next month I'm going to be chilling out and buying presents. Although I need to remove the old tyres from the rims and make a start cleaning up this engine. The old head and the jug need to come off so I can repaint the jug. Need to get a gasket set, a replacement gear selector rod as this one is bent, new rings and a new clutch set. I'll paint the complete engine in satin black.  Rear wheel is being rebuilt in January. I've located some genuine NOS front fender mounting washers in a motorbike shop in Indonesia, so I'll probably grab some of those at the end of the month. Affer taking the plastics out of the box I noticed that my number decal on the front panel hadn't had the surrounding decal removed from the numbers. Well it looks a lot better now lol.

Just been looking for the matching front tyre. Mine is a 21 but I'll have to double check to see it this fits ok. I've also got a yellow paint pen to colour in the 'Dunlop' logo on the tyre walls.

Just landed what looks like an original exhaust pipe for a 465/500 for £110. Seems to be in really good condition considering its 40 years old.

What a cracking thread , i am so glad i didnt see it early, and got to read 7 pages in one go LOL.

As much as the RM work is impressive, the Raleigh Burners are out of this world, your grandkids are lucky kids.

And this thread will be invaluable to me , as i am about to embark on an 81 RM125 build, and loads of the stuff you have found alternatives for will help me no end,

Martin at Crooks Suzuki is a great guy, we were up in the Lakes a few months ago, and i decided to drop in and pay him a visit, drove and hour and a bit to get to his shop, to be greeted with a ' on holiday for 2 weeks ' sign on the door.

Was lucky enough to find a NOS exhaust for mine, but feel i need to get a cone pipe or repro one, and let it go to someone who has to have it, mine will be raced and and it wont look good for long.

Desperate to get an 83 RM500 build or bike , but that will have to wait,

And i love that most of your pics have a bread bin in the background, these US guys have no idea what its like trying to build a bike in the UK, my last 3 builds have been done in my dining room .

Keep at it, look forward to seeing it done.

I bought this in the summer, its already in bits, its a winter project.

I actually cleared the decks today to allow me to pull it out and start looking at it .

Slowly... put hours in on the tank, painted a few bits, and got all the aluminium bits off to blasting, bought a shock, will update my thread when i get a chance to upload a few better pics.

Currently paused due to having my pick-up blow its guts out last week, so ' old bike money' is on hold until that is fixed.

Bad news about your truck Phil. One expense you don't need especially this time of year. As for your bike you should fly through it with all the available parts about.  I think Huggys just broke a few RM125's. I grabbed a few bits off those. Chuffed about this muffler i landed and the mounting I got for £20 came from Huggys. If I can find a NOS rear silencer or one in good condition I'll be happy. I started on the bike properly after coming out of hospital, used it as a kind of rehabilitation. Building a 40 year old bike from basically the frame up has been and still is a mission. If I decide to do another one I'll buy it with all the parts although, if I find another 465 frame I'll be buying lol.

You'll have to upload pics of the work to your thread Phil. My tank needs a final once over before I fit the rubber mounts, decals, screw and tap. Got the pipe and strap, just need the decal set although the full set including warning decals is near on £100. I may try and get the full set reproduced a few times once it arrives.

Just highlighted the Dunlop writing and logo on the rear tyre. Doesn't look 3 bad.

Lol...well it was bloody hard to do lol. Its rather cold today. Hopefully my exhaust should arrive later. I've made a small list of bits to get next week. Front tube, rim-lock, front pads and front wheel bearings. The week after its pay day so its basically all Christmas presents, but I may be able to squeeze the front tyre out of that. Having the rear wheel built in January and hopefully I'll start building the bike up in February.

Just sanded and primed the stem for paint tomorrow. That will be the clamps and bars done. Fork stanchions need re-chroming and the NOS bottom outers can be fitted with new seals, oil and gas at the same time. Front numberplate and ICU are done so that's basically it for the front end now. Just the front wheel to finish and bolts/clips/brackets etc to be zink plated.

Hi guys,

lower stem is now painted and lacquered.  I gave the primer a quick rub down with 8k paper prior to painting. It's come up rather well.

After painting the bottom clamp I noticed that the paint on the upper clamp was a shade lighter. So while the paints were out I re-painted the top clamp again and again with another coat of lacquer. I'll have to paint the bar clamps shortly but I'm pleased with the overall result. I've also got new upper and lower bearings for the steering and the bolts are being zink plated.

Question! Does anyone know what aluminium paint Suzuki used? As you can see the original has a gold tinge to it. Its very noticeable even on these pictures.

Cheers Gaz.

Well all clamps have been painted. I took the bar clamps down to the metal. Just bearings to fit and the nuts and bolts to be zink plated. Looking for a NOS stem top bolt and washer, although I've found a few washers in the USA and Japan but postage is twice that of the washer. May have to get them re-chromed when I send the grandchildrens BMX parts off to the platers.

OK that's all from me today guys, have a great weekend.

Stay safe.

Well guys n gals I'm Gaza 55 UK, been rather ill for a few years, almost lost the battle a couple of months ago but not so fast. Building a RM465 from the frame up for my daughter and soon to be 3 grand children. Got a rolling frame, tank, seat, broken airbox and after a 5 year search, purchased the engine with compression just last week. It's a miracle just like me 😇. Help with parts would be fantastic and don't worry about the shipping. Searching for a genuine, clean airbox, an original front sprocket guard, rear swing arm chain guide, original throttle and maybe another tank, this has a slight doming or lump below the filler cap. If you can help me out it would be highly appreciated. I get paid monthly so it may be a few weeks before I can pay you. That's all I can think of for now.

Have a great day gang, stay safe. G.

It’s not a 465, but nice bike nonethelessSmile

Very nice mate. Its basically the same bike as the 82 465 only with a slightly bigger bore and different head isn't it?

Maybe. It’s basically the same bike as yours. These bikes were ridiculously easy to ride. I had an ‘81 that put together and it was super plush.

Mine is an 81 frame with an 82 engine. It took me 5 years to find that motor.  I'm looking for another frame ideally an 82 to go with the engine and then maybe an 81 engine so I've got the pair.

Hoping to be working on the swing arm tomorrow. Needs cleaning up, rubbing down and putting in primer. I've decided to paint most of it in silver, while polishing the sides with numerous grades of paper until I get the desired finish. Not sure if I'm going to lacquer over the polished sides. I won't be using any metal polish just elbow grease, paper and a clean buffer pad. I can then attach the new chain guide I built, the new decals, bearings and the chain protector I've restored. The chain tensioners etc can all be fitted later when they've been re-plated.

They look shit painted, one of my 250's painted and it just looks wrong.

And they look wrong polished too.

Luckily i have a spare to practice on, which i will clean up with degreaser and Scotch Brite, then run down the length of the arm with wet and dry 400(ish) to get the extrusion lines back in it , then maybe a light lacquer... cant remember who told me how to do that, but there's looked sweet.

I'm not painting or going with the chrome effect, it's aluminium, so it's going to look aluminium. It has a few light scratches, nothing deep so they need addressing. Overall its not in bad shape really.

Now my NOS lower front fork outers are polished aluminium and they look sweet. One of my stanchions is scratched and needs re-chroming so I'm sending the pair off along with the lower outers and they can swap them out when they build them back up. I ordered a NOS stanchion and it got lost in the post. Was waiting 4 weeks and for an extra £100 I could've got both of mine re-chromed.

LOL ... i read that post on my phone and only saw the first bit and the picture .... sounds like you told me LOL.

My good unit has a few digs in it , that hopefully the stickers will cover.

Prior to it's last few years of neglect this bike seems to have been looked after. Whoever owned it last basically ran it into the ground and then gave up on it. I think the engine was for sale at Huggys, infact there was 2 for sale and they were both wrecked. One was seized and the other in bits. It was probably ridden till it couldn't ride no more.

All I had was a bent frame, swing arm, knackered shock, damaged forks top and bottom, wheels with rusty spokes, worn tyres and rusty bars. There was one foot peg, a clutch cable,1 after market lever and that was it. Oh yes a snapped off airbox mounting screw stuck in the in the frame. Even the front wheel nut had been removed and it was missing its rim-lock. The only undamaged parts were the tripple clamps, swing arm and both wheel hubs.

The engine that took me 5 years to find has a damaged left side crank case, broken cylinder head and bent gear selector rod. I've got all those parts except for the rod, but I've located a couple of those and I'll get one in a month or so if theyre still for sale along with a clutch, gasket set and hours pulling it all apart, painting it, changing bearings and putting it back together. 🤪

Cool, is it your bike mate?

No, I wish. This is Carson Brown (BBR Motorsports) who put this one together Smile
