Having seen Airoh’s super-cool lids grace the heads of myriad world championship motocrossers I decided it was time yours truly blagged one for himself (for the purposes of testing, naturally).
The Italian brand has been around a while but it appears to have upped its game recently, producing some well designed, top notch helmets and dishing them out to some equally top notch riders. Visit the Grand Prix paddock and you’ll see the likes of Antonio Cairoli, Josh Coppins, Tommy Searle, Ken De Big Man and Mike Brown sporting these lids, and if they’re good enough for them…
Right then, first things first. When I received the helmet from UK distributors Feridax I was warned that it might feel a little tight when I tried it on. They reckon most people think they need a bigger size at first, but the truth is that Airoh make them narrow at the base, so they’re a bit of a squeeze to get into, however, once inside you discover there’s actually plenty of room, even for my ears (they used to call me ‘wingnut’ at school).
The internal lining is comfortable and the general fit is first class. As is the overall feel and quality of this Stelt Senior version (a Junior one is available too, priced at £159.99).
In line with all good helmets it boasts a light shell, a decent ventilation system, an adjustable peak and a removable (and washable) lining. You really can’t ask for much more.
It’s available in too many different colours and graphic styles to list, but rest assured they’ll be one to match your riding kit – if I found one to match my gold Sinisalo gear then you really won’t have a problem!
At £209 it’s considered a mid-range helmet, and at that price it’s bloody good value. You get all the style, protection and fancy bits that you’d normally associate with a higher-end product – even the bag it comes in feels thick and luxurious – for two-thirds of the price. Bargain.
I’ve seen a few Internet forum debates on whether or not these Airoh jobbies are any good and I can say, hand on heart, that they’re worth the pennies. Get one while they’re hot… SS
