kickstart assembly question

Im installing a barnett clutch basket in my 04 CR250 and the kickstart assembly came out on accident while i had it all taken apart. I figured out how it goes back in but i have a question. Is the kickstart gear supposed to spin freely in both directions when the side cover is taken off like shown in the picture? I just want to make sure its in correctly before i finish this job. I dont understand why it wouldnt only spin freely in one direction.

I would assume it should in 1 direction. Theres an idle gear between it and the clutch, so if it doesnt spin it will lock the motor.

It should spin freely as it rides on the idle gear between the clutch and the starter. The gear engages when you kick the lever as it moves on a cam in the starter unit.
