So Im rebuilding my first 19 YZ85 for a kid i help out. I usually try to set things up a bit better than they come from factory but am having trouble finding any info on tge new engine. Any tipsout tgere from guys who have been racing tgese?

Stock squish is 1.46mm which seems massive coming from mistly JTM 85 background. Even our okder YZ85s ran .7mm. VHM offers a head which has 1.3mm squish setting so thinking to machine stock down a bit closer to that?

Other than that planning on doing a typical port match & clean up just because that’s what I do.

Bikes is bone stock otherwise rider is a fast junior just coming off a KTM 65.

The frame is losing paint at many of the welds which from having past experience with the okder frames cracking concerms me but not seeing any obvios issues. Yamaha has always had ****** pain

Yamaha’s paint is total crap on the 85’s. Just had my son’s frame, subframe, linkage and swingarm powder coated. Turned out really nice and holds up way better.
