Kx Grip Removal?

How the hell do you get stock grips of a 2012 KX450?? I would just buy a new throttle tube but I am leaving for a south Texas moto trip on tuesday and shops are not open. Any Ideas?

I know the older Kaws they electro fused the grip to the throttle tube. I would just replace the tube and toss the old one in my tool box as a spare. You can try to shave the original grip off, but its a bitch. Run it if you can until you can replace the whole thing.

The grips are melted on to the throttle tube and the bar. I tried everything to salvage my stock tube and it was impossible.

I did not even attempt to remove mine, boughta WC throttle tube and new grips. I have a 12 450 kawy also, I have seen guys using razor blades, contact cleaner, sand paper. the hassle is not worth the price of a new throtttle tube, Good luck.

Your better off keeping the stock grips on until you can buy a new throttle tube, OR you can get a razor blade and go to town haha

I take the grip off with a wire wheel on a bench grinder, it works great,It's a little messy though.Cut the flange part of the grip off with a razor blade first.

Thats what I ended up doing after hours of torching, cussing and temper tantrums. I put my angle grinder in my vise and sat there for an hour or so lightly grinding the rubber off.

If you have to ever do it again find a wire wheel like in the photo below,It only takes about 10 or 15 minutes taking off the grip this way.And it doesn't really hurt the throttle sleeve at all.

Be REALLY careful when doing this. That wire wheel will suck your hand in so quick you wont believe it! Don't ask me how I know this, but a wire wheel turning at 2350 rpm will remove skin at an alarming rate. Unsure

All that work for a $10 new throttle tube. Save the hassle get a cheap throttle tube or a quality throttle tube.

It took me almost an hour to shave most of the rubber off of the handlebars when I replaced the grips on the 2006 kx250 I had. Whoever came up with the idea to basically weld the grips to the handlebars is either really stupid or wants people like us to struggle.

For those that don't already know. Do not buy the OEM tube as it comes with the grip on it.

You can bet that somewhere along the way there was a lawsuit due to a throttle grip coming off. Now you get one that will never come off.
