Unless you are slaying everybody at major amateur events, you aren't fast enough to need AV fuel. Don't waste your money.

Motocross Action Quote

"Word to the wise. All production motocross engines are designed to run on the 91-octane, unleaded premium that can be purchased at the gas station down the street. If the engine can use pump gas under a race load without detonating, you seldom find hidden power in $25 a gallon race gas."

Only reason I run 50/50 in my 2-stroke is to up the compression a little and avoid any detonating. I used nothing but pump in my YZ tho.

Lots of misinformation here.

avgas or 100ll is NOT 25 per gallon. it's 5.65.

It's 100oct rating is for 30k altitude. (which is funny because piston planes only do about 8,000 AGL) At sea level it is 115. It has a shit ton of lead and all engines love it. I run avgas and honda hp2 at 60:1 in my two stroke and my pistons are shiny after 20 hours.

it is lightly oxygenated to help with high altitude performance. not as much as U4.4, but it's there.

The only additives that are aviation specific, are a blue dye to detect fuel leaks (serious problem on piston planes) and a high altitude anti-freezing additive. both of which have zero ill-effects on bikes or performance.

the stuff is so good, but at this point i've grown so tired of trying to explain it to the average redneck that i just dont give a shit anymore, run whatever you want.

P.S. I PROMISE that MXA quote was written before the advent of 10% ethanol gasoline.

AVGas has an octane rating of 115 at sea level?? Isn't that going to result in more compression than a stock motor could handle anyway? Good to know though, if that's the case.

Not at all how it works dude. Higher octane doesn't raise your compression. It withstands pre-ignition caused by higher compression better. Cheap, low octane gas explodes (detonates/pre-ignites) before top dead center because it burns hotter... if the compression/heat is high enough, that heat turns into spontaneous combustion...heat is horsepower/energy leaving your motor and vanishing into thin air. it's a "waste product" of combustion.

No road tax on av gas. Its 4.90 here in Iowa. My 250 sx runs great on it.
