What is the latest info to be aware of regarding iPads? I know nothing about that stuff but contemplating getting my kid one when he is home from Okinawa.
Do you guys know if an iPad that is bought in America will work in Japan ?

He will love it. You have the iPad mini or the new regular size iPad. Def get the regular size iPad. Thing is great. It's fast as shit, great battery life and wonderful screen.
Now, which iPad?
there is the inexpensive-ish iPad 2 starting around $400, The iPad mini(don't bother) and the newest iPad with retina display starting at $500. For a traveller, you will want more memory in the device so I would suggest getting the 64gb model.
I was thinking about all the long flights he has to take and maybe an iPad would make those 18-hour flights more bearable? He also will be going to Thailand soon also and thought it might be of use somehow? Hes an 0602 and wondered if he could use it for work somehow? I dunno, just guessing here.
So if cost didnt matter, what would you get specifically ?

Definitely a good choice for that.....I use my tablet when travelling and it's great.
Lighter than a laptop and you can have music, books, movies etc....
Invest in a Zag Shield (screen cover) and a good solid case for it too.
I have found with both my iphone and ipad that when on a power converter (euro 220v to US 110v) the unit acts and responds funny, it basically works like crap when plugged in. When unplugged, it's fine, but if plugged in, it's crap...keep that in mind, and it didn't matter what converter I used (I tried several)
What do you mean "non-wifi data (cellular) will kill you" ?
Im just wondering if that kinda thing would apply to the iPad also?

the wifi is just that, wifi access. typically unlimited.
the other access talked about above is as long as you have cell service, you can search the internet on that account. It will suck up data usage and not be cheap. The iPad models are different I believe. Not worth the extra $$ for the wifi/cell option. Stick with wifi only option imo.
Why not just get a tablet, non Apple, for a fraction of the cost? You can get a tablet android for around $200 and will do everything your ipad will do. or am I missing something here?
I got my ipad free last year as a gift. If I had to pay cash for it myself, I would go android....cause I'm a cheap bastard.
We do a lot of traveling in the USA and avoid big cities so our ipad2 works great on the road for us in 3G cellular and wifi when we have it. Everyone's needs are different though. Of course if he already has an iPhone with decent data plan he could set it up to use as a wifi hotspot for his iPad (for a fee of course)

Your iPad should be cellular compatible overseas, his phone should have been as well. I can only assume he did not buy the data plan for overseas or have international roaming turned on (it is a feature you need ti turn on)
Your unlimited data plan you buy here is not valid overseas, you have to buy a different (and expensive) overseas cellular data plan.

The need for cell service really depends on the individual use, if we had wifi only I'd just toss the ipad2 in the trash and use my laptop and iPhone.
They work great. Most anywhere he is going to be, will have wifi, right?
That's all that matters.
Don't need a connection to watch TV shows and movies once downloaded.
Also, traveling with an IPad sucks unless you are playing a game waiting at a gate. There is so much entertainment on a decent International flight, my Ipad wouldn't even get pulled out of the bag.
My oldest is a "genius" at a socal Apple store and also does small device (phone/ipad/ipod) training. There's a ton of flexibility and capability built into them that you can tailor to your uses and circumstances.
The mini is actually a pretty incredible device, but it just depends on what you (he) wants.
Just not comfortable to use In my opinion. I wanted to be able to use it like my iPhone

Then came the iPad mini. Had a play with a demo. Felt good in my hands, so I got one.
Retina display is amazing, Siri actually works, if you're into her..
The thing is really thin, and I can reach everywhere with my thumbs. Then there's iCloud so
Everything is synced to my phone, makes things easy.
I love it, problem is I can hardly put it down when I'm home. It's wifi, is as fast as I need it to be..
If I take it away from home and need the net I just use my iPhone as a personal hotspot.
So my suggestion is to not overlook the mini like some have suggested. It's a great size, the size I think
It should have been all along.
In all of the reviews I have read, the display is the one thing that they all dislike.
But, yeah, it's absence is a compromise and it'll probably be there in the next gen.
