I love how his jacket says "North American Pride" I just thought that was a bit Ironic.

Wow that plane is beautiful. Everything about the Su-27, especially the 2-seater, is phenomenal.

Now for the logistical side of the story. Beyond the $5mil chunk of change to purchase the aircraft, what type of qualifications must you have to fly it in US Airspace? Is that even possible? Obviously you have to posses a fortune well above $5mil to own and operate this bueat, as Jet Fuel is not normally cheap, but how would one go about maintaining a garage SU-27? Fighter Squadrons, both US and foreign, have teams of trained flight engineers to tune the state of the art equipment for every flight. Like factory mechanics vs riding out of your pick up with a toolbox.

Either way, if I had the money, I would make it happen. That would be a dream come true, pretty much. You'd always have a one up in the bars while trying to score chicks. The guy with the Ferrari thinks he has it on lock, when you just so happen to mention that you are the proud owner of a world class fighter jet Wink

You are right about the crew of people. I was a Crew Chief on fighters and I handled the airframe, engines, and hydraulic systems on jets very similar to that. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need a weapons crew but you would certainly need avionics, electrical, fuel systems experts along with a steady supply of Russian parts. My guess is you would have to hire Russian mechanics who know the system to fix any problems that come up. Shit, wouldn't all the technical manuals be in Russian? I can't imagine the nightmare it would be if you wanted to actually own and operate it in the US, not because of any flight restrictions but just the effort it would take to keep it airworthy. I'm not sure if there would be any special restrictions on flying it in the US (assuming all the weapons systems were removed).

Yeah that's what I was thinking. You'd have to be able to employ your own small flight crew almost.

I more so meant legal licenses and things like that. I don't know a great deal about the system in the US, as far as who is qualified to fly what. Where do you go to get the training to fly a Russian Cold War era Fighter? lol

I would think you could easily get checked out on it in Russia. You can go and spend a few thousand to get a ride in one easily enough. I would be willing to bet it wouldn't be all that hard to get it approved to fly in the US if you have all your multi-engine jet certs and got checked out on it by the Ruskies. I think keeping it flying would be a far bigger issue.

I went TDY to Eglin once back in '81 when I worked F-16s out of Nellis. That was a great trip, stayed in a hotel on Ft Walton Beach. I worked F-16s at Nellis from '81-'83, F-4E and G models at Spangdahlem AB in Germany from '83-'86, then on to Myrtle Beach AFB for 6 years on A-10s from '86-'92 (including a little trip to the desert from Aug '90-Mar '91). Then I retrained into computer programming and went to Scott for 5 years and then got out. I have helped turn F-15s and other jets over the years. I got a ride in my F-4G when we were TDY in Spain and got a few minutes of stick time. Awesome fricken' experience. Oh yeah, it would be more than just a checkout ride for the SU-27 but if you have enough money to buy one and maintain one then you surely would have enough money to get the hours of training needed to fly it and I'm sure they would take your money to train you.

I know someone who could help you out with the flying....Wink

Only 5 mil? Damn, what a steal... har....

I'd still love to experience a cat shot and recovery, I think that would be the ultimate ride....

I've heard that since the FAA doesn't have experts on the foreign built exotic aircraft that the type rating can consist of an oral exam (from a book you give the examiner) and if it's not a two seater they watch you do three tkofs and ldgs... that's it.

I've always liked the P-51. I like the F-4U corsair too. Some retired air force pilot flies a sweet F-86 at the air shows too.

F-4U:

Couple of nice restored F-86s:

I dig the F-86, that's the "Sabre" right?

If money was no object, I'd buy the largest hangar I could find and just stuff it with cool airplanes like that.

I think I'd have just one huge building full of old MX bikes and airplanes... ahhh I better buy a lotto ticket today...

A fighter pilot isnt rated to fly a cessna.

If I could own a fighter it would be a loaded up with fake bombs, Phantom. Nothing looks more agro or pissed off.

That said, next choice if garage/hangar space was at a premium, I'd get a 18. It will fit in a 4's glovebox.

Or an F5 Tiger Trainer. Sneaky looking 2 seat 2 engine rig.

I've already had sim time for an 18, so someday, I'm gonna pay to train and fly the 4. There are deals for the public.

I love the little F5. No single engine POS for me.

I think the Corsair is one of the most nice looking planes ever, too bad they are hard to fly RC due to the angle on the wings, otherwise I would have gotten one. I bought the P-51 Mustang instead.

There's a few airplanes I'd like to have...I like piston power, I'd have something for every mission.

Edge540...

Cessna 400--fast fixed gear single, G1000...awesome little airplane, I flew to Vegas with a friend in a rented 400 and we were told on multiple occasions to slow because we were catching a 737 on approach.

Cessna 206- Rugged, I'd take the wheelpants off and fly it around Mexico and South America for about a month.

G550- For the ultra long range mission, still small enough to get into most airports with a decent sized runway. Crazy endurance.

550 is a bit big.

I'd get a new 4 seater jet.......about a million bucks.

3 strippers and you is enough. anymore and its a headache.

Only problem is the range and useable load on the VLJ's is crap.

An EMB Legacy, small citation or KingAir would be ideal.

Actually if I had the money I would have either an Extra 300 or an Edge 540. A Cap 232 wouldn't be out of the question but I think I would like the Extra 300 the best.
