The guy is lucky that he didn't kill him self or someone else, not to mention the damage he could have caused to one of the other planes sitting there.

Seen that video a few years back. You "might" be able to get away with flying an airplane without any time or an instructor if you had some knowledge of all the controls and are able to fly sims without crashing but there isn't much chance of getting away with that in a chopper.

I know how to fly, no real instruction other than being in a 2 seater and told to "take the stick and fly this thing" it doesnt take long to figure things out.

Throw you in some actual and see how things turn out.

Most people with basic knowledge can keep it in the air during daylight in VMC not holding any altitudes or headings....fixed wing

Heli? Not a chance.

I had a Heli CFI tell me that young kids pick up flying choppers really quickly compared to middle aged guys. It's defiantly not easy.

The guy in the video says the pilot wasn't "checked out" in that Heli. That doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't have some experience or even a certificate. Usually pilots are "checked out" by an instructor before flying a different airplane or helicopter. Sometimes it's one flight, occasionally it's a few flights...but it doesn't mean the guy has never had a lesson.

Yeah. Maybe it's just that I've been into airplanes all my life since I was about 5 years old but I think by the time I actually soloed in an airplane I could have flown one and landed it without killing myself without actually flying with an instructor (light aircraft of course). To fly helis you just have to be wired differently (at least differently than me). I must admit I don't have solo time in a real helicopter and the only experience at flying them is in a simulator. "Flying" a helicopter isn't really all that hard but "hovering" and "landing" a helicopter in my opinion is a LOT more difficult than it is in an airplane. After trying to fly one in a sim I certainly wouldn't attempt it in a real chopper without an instructor on board.

David Lee Roth took Helicopter flying lessons, he said it was like trying to balance a marble on a 2X4!

That's about right. Smile I used to be heavily into RC airplanes and a buddy of mine was good at airplanes and choppers. He said the best way to practice flying RC choppers was to throw 20 dollar bills into your toilet.

I was a crewchief on CH-53Es in the Marine Corps and got a little, ahem, "stick time". This is highly top secret and big time illegal but we had some kick ass pilots that allowed us to "try" to land and take off. I had some time in a simulator too and the sim is NOTHING like the real thing. Well, it was sorta like it I guess, but my lord, the real thing has REAL consequences.

Taking off was relatively easy. Landing was nearly impossible.

If the pilot (on the other side) controlled the pedals (yaw) for me, I could land it fairly well. I mean, I could get us on the ground and most likely not kill anyone. haha. But trying to control the pedals and the other two sticks was IMPOSSIBLE!!!! Scary as shit too. White knuckling the thing the entire time. Forgetting to breathe. Worse than MX. hahaha.

I wanna get my pilots license someday but doubt I ever will. It costs a fortune and I don't think I'm REALLY that into it. If I were rich, I'd love to do it though. Flying is a cool ass hobby.

I know I wouldn't choose a helo though! hahahaha. I'll stick to fixed wing, thank you very much.

Awe. That was nice of the guy sitting next to you with the dual controls, made you believe you did it "all by yourself"....

He gave me an assist on the sticks several times but after a few tries, I was doing it alone (sans pedals).

I remember some kid stole a small plane and flew it to the Bahamas. He said he learned to fly from practicing on his Play Station2 ! The kid is in jail now.

Technically he did OK on the flying......it was that setting it back down part that fucked him up.

Kid had balls for sure, I think he totaled every airplane he stole but there a big difference between "doing it all on your own" with an instructor sitting next to you and really "doing it all on your own" with nobody else in the airplane. Shame the kid destroyed property but that took some balls.

I thought the same thing when I was an A-10 crew chief. The first time the pilots fly one of those they are on their own. Simulator only before the first flight.

He flew and intentionally crash landed without dying Couldn't land at an airport he would have been arrested.

Didn't he crash one at an airport? The rest were ran out of fuel.

you are probably right. I only skimmed one article a while back. Based on what I read, I thought he did a pretty good job of crash landing considering he walked away repeatedly.

I guess my interpretation is that crash landing isn't easy or safe. To walk away takes luck. To do it repeatedly must have some skills.
