Traveling by amtrak

anybody done much traveling by amtrak- I'm thinking of booking a trip to the virgin Festival in Baltimore in Aug. The fare is insanely cheap (Like $90 round trip) Travel time is equlivant to driving.

sounds like a great deal. I'd love to travel by train if it were practical in the states.

Wow, you found a cheap deal on Amtrak? Congratulations, it usually costs me as much as flying, so I use Greyhound and suffer through 20 hours in cramped seats with people who smell of vomit. Anyway, Amtrak is, IMO, slightly more comfortable than flying these days simply because there's a lot less hassle to it, and it's far better than Greyhound as far as the accommodations. I'd go for it.

If you know anybody who has kids they want to ditch for the weekend of that festival, send 'em on down to the Baltimore Convention Center and we'll show them cartoons, video games, and girls in skimpy costumes all weekend for the low, low price of $55. Grinning

just checked a flight the same weekend
it's a little more than double. Still cheap, but I though I'd like to trya a train trip once, plus i'm paying for 2 tickets, so the saving double.
In addition, the airport is over an hour away, while rail station is about 20 minutes. I have to imagine there is less hassle getting on and off as well

My wife sometimes takes the train over to Seattle to see her parents, mostly in the winter when driving the mountain passes is not as much fun. It's a good deal if she is the only one going, not as good of a deal if the kids go too.

Do not, repeat, do not expect the trains to run on time. The departure & arrival times are guidelines at best on AMTRAK, so if you have to be somewhere at a certain time give yourself lots of leeway. Coast Starlight from Sacramento to Seattle was 6 hours late on a 24 trip last time we took it. Shorter trips wil be better & commuter lines generally are close but being "on time" is all relative.

that's good info- thanks

listed travel time is around 5-1/2 hours so maybe it won't be too far off
