is apparently much easier if you actually play with someone else.

I've been messing around with it for a little over a year and Friday night a friend of mine from out of town came over. He's a pretty good player ( compared to my pitiful ass, he might as well been Clapton in my living room)

Our musical tastes differ wildly in some areas ( he likes Nickleback and hates Foo Fighters, while I violently disagree), but he showed me alot in couple of hours and really I pregressed more in that time than all of the last year.

I had been getting a little frustrated and this made me wanna keep going

I wouldn't trust someone who likes Nickelback to teach me anything about music. Grin

Seriously though, that's true for a lot of things, having somebody else to imitate makes learning easier and more fun for most people, especially compared to sitting and staring at a book.

Anytime you can play with somebody better than you it can teach you invaluable information. Even if they play a different instrument than you, you can always learn something from great musicians.

When I've taken "formal" lessons I found it boring and lacking in motivation because it was too structured to keep it fun. My son and a few of his friends play - a couple of them are good and a couple just tool around with it - but I'm amazed at how my son can play some pretty decent songs while he doesn't really know shit ( I can't even convince him to let me teach him play bar chords, which would open the door to me teaching him 100 songs in a month's time). But when you're learning stuff you WANT to learn, you can keep it fun and still progress.
Here's an excellent site (free but you can donate if you desire) that I stumbled upon that has videos to help you learn everything from the very basics to advanced stuff, and has a selection of very simple songs for the beginner too - justinguitar.com.He's got over 100 videos on the site that are real helpful.
Youtube is an awesome learning tool as well. For just about any song you want to learn, if you browse through the covers of that song you'll find a couple videos that present it in a way that will help you learn. I used to just learn from the tabs, but when I started watching people cover the songs on youtube along with the tabs, it became so much easier.
I've been playing for about 30 years, but I'm not really any better now than I was 2 years after I started. I just play for fun, I haven't spent the time to learn lead, but I just crunch out my simple bar chords and play old 80's metal tunes and it puts a smile on my face. The key to learning is to not overburden yourself but determine your goals and do whatever keeps it fun instead of "work".

hey now, early creed was pretty good before stapp turned into a giant doucher... and I wouldn't trust anybody who loves nickelback and hates the foo fighters either. FF rocks.
