Hi all, I am 53 years young and just had 2 total knee replacement 8 weeks ago............Is it silly to still want to still ride dirtbikes? ..... Would really like to ride crosscountry type dirt riding with knee braces of course, but I am concerned the replacement knees would not be up to it.......................

Any thoughts?

You need to rehab like crazy and get your knees right. Guessing that's 6-12 months based off my brother in law who had a knee replacement.

Once you get healed up and build knee strength back I think you would be okay. My brother in law is very active and hasn't had any issues.

Get a good set of knee braces too if you don't own any. Take it easy and don't over do anything.

Knee braces won't help in a twisting around injury like hooking you toe on a branch or rock. I'm close to having an ankle fusion so that type of hit is a concern to me. Ask you doc or PT.

........... Captmoto if I ask Doc or PT, I get the conservative answer (Don't ride) ....I wanted to hear from riders and medical people alike that understand dirtbike riding ect.........at this point I feel I shouldn't ride again......the negatives out way the positives.................Is sad for me, like so many others I love screaming threw the bush on two wheels with my mates............

More comments pls...............

I'm putting off a hip replacement and TKR to remain 100% biological as long as possible. Wish I'd done yoga all those years instead lifting weights.

Craig, there's an Ortho doctor on ThumperTalk who knows knows the rigors of the sport and replies to questions.

I know a lot of people rip on Thumpertalk but the doc over there in the health and fitness section rides and has done a lot of knee repairs for guys and I think he was against MX after knee replacements. Check over there.

I say live your life the way you want to live, in the safest manner possible while doing so.

For me, that means riding. I'd do it even if there was a chance I'd die. (Because really, there always is.) Just wear the best gear you can and focus on staying on two wheels.

Good luck.

The old man had two replacements years ago. Going strong and he's not lazy by any stretch.
Defs build the leg muscle and get A-kit suspension
