Spent 3 days on the Kern River with the kids. I only caught one keeper. I think I figured out why the fishing was so slow. I'm not an accomplished angler but I have done well at stream trout in the past. I think it was the low water/warm conditions. The normal riffles produced nothing because whatever fish were there were gathered in deep pools where the water was colder.
The bastards were jumping out of the water late in the afternoon, right where we were camping. I need to learn fly fishing for this spot.

Looks like paradise to me! Nothing better then a nice trout stream with awesome scenery to boot. Is it artificial bait only? I always turn to salted minnows on a minow rig when the trout get "shy". Super awesome picture BTW.

I was just out that way, borg. I did not go up to the Kern as I heard it was so low. When I do go up there I go up to the Nine-mile area, which is very near my hometown. Anyway, we fished a few creeks just below Bishop and had some outstanding fish - especially considering they were a bit low and only about ten feet wide on average. I caught this 17 1/4 'bow with a plastic worm. Whenever I go out there I always look for areas on the creeks where the folks from down below won't (or can't) fish. I always find some great fish that way.

Also, nice photo. Sounds like you had a good time with the exception of watching trout jump. Next time you see that, go get some live crickets and put on a bobber about 2 feet above the cricket. See if they'll hit that. The trick is to get the cricket to float, so no split-shot. Fill the bobber about half full to give you some weight.

No bait restrictions on this section. About 12 miles up river it's artificial lures with barbless hooks only.

Also, you can try throwing a small lure at them in conditions like that. A fly lure would probably get some action there. In the photo below you can just see the kind of lure I'm talking about behind the trout you can see the fly and a bit of the small spoon in front of it.

You are holding that fish wrong! Cool

Need to extend your arm out and to the side at just the correct angle and that fish will look 3 x the size - my father inlaw taught me that last winter Grinning

Haha, yeah. I was trying to handle him gently so I could put him back. He kept flopping around though and this was after it took me almost ten minutes to get him on the beach. He took me downstream about 20 yards during the fight.

When we fish the lower niagara river its not uncommon to see sturgeon swim by that are over 6 feet long , very creepy looking . One washed up on shore here a couple years back that was estimated to be 100 years old.

Yup, it's a small sturgeon (56") out of the North Saskatchewan River near Vermillion, Alberta. Still pretty big for a small fish.

White people all look the same. If I had to pick a rider, I'd say he looks more like Kdub.

I could fill this thread up with fishing pics. I will fish in a mud puddle if there was a minnow in it. I've been lucky enough to fish at some pretty amazing places, lakes, rivers, fresh water, salt water, offshore in places from Florida to NY, Italy, Germany, and Asia. But my favorite place to fish is in the Chesapeake bay around Norfolk Va, or offshore of the Outer Banks NC because salt water fishing is just so much fun. But one of the most memorable catches was this fish off Bali Indonesia.

I caught this fish on a hand line.

Off of these rocks

I like watching the brown bears fish at brooks falls Alaska on the live cam. The Salmon just started running and they are jumping up the falls now. 5-6 bears but as it picks up there will 20-30 all sitting in the river.

Sorry if it sounded like was discounting his catch. I'd love to catch one like that for sure. Lol
