Driving with a trailer

So post a pic of the gal and I will let you know if its important whether she can back up a trailer or not.

I can't back a trailer worth a shit
Takes multiple tries.
I can drive a car for miles and around turns in reverse, backing a trailer is misery

I understand "turn opposite of the direction you want to go"
My left handed brain can't get it right.
It's a struggle

The shorter the trailer, the bigger the problem. That being said, the best advice I can give is "Slow down, take your time and stop if you're ever in doubt". You wouldn't believe the trailers and the spots I've had to back them into. And not once have I fucked up.

Tell her to put her hands together and hold the bottom of the steering wheel. The you move your hands in the direction you want the trailer to turn while backing up.

Thats how I was taught and I've never had a problem. Takes a little bit of practice though - second nature once you learn how to actually do it.

The short ones are a bit more of a pain in the ass though.

Backing up a motorcycle trailer is childs play. I do it using my side mirrors only. I never turn my head to look back because not only is it harder but you get a stiff neck. I guess if you grow up on a farm you learn how to back things up at a young age. I used to have to back 4 wheel hay wagons full of hay into the shed. A 4 wheel trailer with the pivot on the front wheels is harder than a 2 wheel trailer. If you want a real challenge hook two 4 wheel hay wagons together and back them into a shed. I have done this a few times too and it is very tricky. After the farm I was a crew chief in the air force and one of my jobs was to tow airplanes. I was the one they always made drive the tug because I was the only one that could back an F-16 onto the sound suppressor rails first shot every time. You only have about a half inch of clearance on each side of the 3 wheels. I just always enjoyed doing it because it came so easy to me and I knew it was very difficult for many others.

void, the 4 wheel trailer stumped me once. I've only had 1 chance to drive one of those things, and I didnt enjoy it at all. Had a bitch of a time backing it up into its place. That is a league above my trailer experience haha.

My dad taught me to back the truck up using the side mirrors only and he gave me a tip that I found to be very cool and to this day it still seems cool. If you want to back up using side mirrors only with no trailer and want to be able to do it with a lot of speed and even take corners without getting confused here is what you do. Look in your mirror and while backing up just pretend you are going forward and you are actually looking out the front window rather than looking in your mirror. It works! Try it next time you are out and have a long winding road or driveway to test it out on. When you see a left corner come up in your mirror you turn the wheel to the left just as if you were going forward.

Get her on a riding lawn mower with a small cart or trailer.

She needs to feel what happens with that concept if she is struggling with the bigger version.

I learned that while working construction. Use the mirrors, it's much, much easier.

I'm actually pretty good at this from practicing with the ol' mans quad and quad trailer when I was young. Now that I have a river boat, I HAD too teach my girl friend to get the truck and trailer down the launch to make the load easier, instaed of tying the boat up, running to get the truck, then untying it and loading it up. I can usually get my boat in the garage without a problem and there is only inche's on either side.

She got really good in the first season, so that made me pretty happy. She still like's to open the tailgate so she can see the empty trailer....but she's getting beter and better each year. Good luck with teaching her Trin. The best thing is take her to a field too practice and tell her the worst thing she could do is get frustrated.(or jackknife it into your Bumper)
