Cops steal a man's XBox 360

The cops pull this guy over, say they "smell marijuana", and then search the guy's car. Then they find an XBox 360 and some games, and they take it, telling him that when he can bring the receipt to the police station, he can have it back.

So, he goes and gets his receipt, goes to the station, and no one knows anything about it. His XBox is just gone.

Nice early Christmas present for the cop's kids, I bet...

The CHP took my dirt bike ...when i was a teenager,i had this boyd and stellings race bike with a yamie250mx engine in it..i was painting the frame one day and this old sticker came off..it was an CHP ID sticker,which i didn't know about..

The cops thought i stole the bike..they said they were NOT going to procesute me but the bike was gone..i cried..i earned that bike by washing dishes and doing land scape work..well, the guy i bought it from searched in his files and pulled out a piece of paper work that had a secret frame number on the frame..
the cops just called and said come pick up your bike..they put a fresh CHP sticker on it after that..that was scary

I guess you missed the last sentence of the report that the news station found that it was a miscommunication and that the game system hadn't made it to the evidence room by the time the guy went to claim it...kind of like when you just missed the UPS man but you can't take the yellow slip from the door and pick up the package from the UPS depot because it's still on the delivery truck.

There was no police report because the cops took the XBOX360 home and gave it to his kids. It will never make it to the evidence room.

They had no right to take it in the first place. Secondly, just like with a traffic ticket, they have the ability to record the incident in their squad car's onboard computer, and they should've done that, which would've alerted the station of it. But they didn't.

The news story said the police were working several XBox theft cases in that neighborhood.

The policeman believed he had recovered stolen property, and took it, giving the man a receipt.

Apparently it turns out the property wasn't stolen since the man had a Wal Mart receipt for it.

The story didn't say when the man went to reclaim the XBox. If he went to the station right away, the XBox may well have still been in the patrol car because the shift wasn't over. They did say they checked serial numbers on it before the XBox made it to the eveidence room in the story.

You know they take kids' skatebords, Go-Peds, bikes, etc. rather routinely, for things like being out after curfew and such. Have to go back later with their parents to reclaim it.

It said the cops took the XBox without there being any evidence of it being stolen. That's the issue, more than anything. There wasn't a report of that serial number being stolen, but they took it anyway. Why? Is it illegal to carry your XBox to a friend's house in your car to play it there? Is there a law against carrying an open XBox in your car? They had ZERO evidence of it being a theft and took it anyway. If they did that to me, I wouldn't even have a receipt to go reclaim it because if it was more than a month old, the receipt would be long ago in the trash and gone. So, should I lose my XBox to the police just because I didn't keep the receipt? I can't believe you're siding with the police on this.

Because new games aren't available on old systems, but new systems will work on old TVs? I don't know. But it doesn't matter. And I highly doubt that WalMart has a record of every purchase like that. I've never tried it, but it seems ridiculous. But my point stands. The cops had no evidence of it being stolen and they took it from him anyway.
