First bike....comments ?

What do you guys think? A 2006 RMZ 250 with a 290 big bore kit. I got a job and worked a lot of hours and saved up enough to buy my first bike. I love it. After buying it I found it needed its valves adjusted but from what I read, this year and the 07's ate up their own valves pretty fast. Just what I read though.... what do you guys think? Im new to this site so im ready for any criticism you guys bring. Thanks!

That is a nice first bike for sure. Buy a service manual. If you haven't already, I would change the engine oil, coolant, and maybe fork oil and recharge your shock if you are really serious. And install an hour meter. It probably doesn't need to be said, but be sure to do regular maintenance on it and it will treat you well. I know spending more money after you just bought the bike sucks, but ultimately it will save you money.

I don't know what type of riding you will be doing, but keep an alert mind when riding through slow, tight trails when your bike is covered in mud, or when stopped and idling for a while with no air flow. The big bore will make that thing run hotter than usual. Maybe run water wetter in your coolant or look for an after market water pump if it becomes and issue.

And concerning your valves; there is enough information out there to help you adjust your valves if you don't want to pay a shop to do it. Just buy a hot cams shim kit, and some feeler gauges and use the interweb to save you money in the long run. After doing this once or twice, replacing your top end will be less of a big deal.

It might be fine, but check your chain tension. It just looks a little tight from the picture. You want enough slack so it doesn't bind up when going through your suspension travel. Oh and reroute your front brake hose to the inside of your fork Smile Awesome bike though. Have fun and treat the bike right.

Didn't even think about the big bore causing more heat .

No problem at all. People helped me out and supplied advice when I first started riding and it only makes sense to do the same.

I'm a pretty new rider as well. Not so much to the mechanical side of things, but I don't have a lot of seat time. Another important thing to do that I thought about after going to the track this weekend; don't ride above yourself. You hear it a lot but its really hard to not do. I find myself doing it all the time when someone really fast gets ahead of me. I am naturally competitive and my initial reaction is to keep up with them when I get passed. It's just not smart. If you want to ride next weekend and the weekend after that, ride in your comfort zone.

There's a time to push yourself and try that big double you've been eyeing. Don't let another rider influence your choice. Choose to do it because you've worked up the confidence, not because you're trying to prove yourself.

Just run. a good syn oil I dont think your really runing it hard enough yet too have to worry about the valves. the first sign of needing a valve adj is hard statrting issues, Nice ride there
