I grew up riding and want to get back into it after many years off. I've found a couple bikes that look good, but can't decide between them. The CR looks about as mint as a nine year old bike can. The YZ is a bit more used, but has some nice upgrades (notably v force reeds and FMF pipe and silencer). Price is essentially the same between them. From the older reviews and shootouts I've found it seems like the Yamaha is the way to go, however they say the CR is better for taller riders, and I'm 6'1". What to do??

I can't say for sure because my CR125 was an '01, but it seems to be kind of widely accepted that their 125 engine was weak. My '01 was unbelievably slow to the point that I thought all 125's were just that slow because it was the first one I'd ever ridden. However, I ended up buying an RM125 a few years later and that thing seriously felt like it had twice the motor of the Honda. Maybe Honda made some improvements to the later 125 motors, but if '07 engine is anything like what was in my '01 I'd go with the Yamaha.

I have the 06 YZ125 and it's a great bike. Mine is completely stock, runs well, handles well.

My 01 CR125 had a PC pipe silencer, head mods, and a boyesen rad valve.

sold it and got an 05 YZ125 that was bone stock and the YZ walked all over the Honda.

No question go with the YZ you won't regret it.

Please buy the '06 yz125. WAY better bike! Suspension and motor are night and day better. At 6'1", the stronger motor will pull your weight better too. If you need tall bars and seat, those are available.

I bought my son a 08 yz125 and I know you're asking about a different year, these things are bullet proof and fast. Put a Piston and rings, Clutch and fresh tires and live the good life.

Have you ridden both bikes on the same day? Or just go by what everyone says? These bikes are far from night and day difference. I can tell you I've had both bikes at the same time and this is just not true. Comparing a stock 02 CR125 to an 05 CR125 is night and day. Both the YZ and CR are good bikes. Pick what you feel comfortable on because they do have a different feel to them.

2002 Honda came out with the pc valve

the 2002 125 smoked the 2001 125

having said that , yz all the way , especially 2006 and up with the SSS units

The 2005 125 yz still suffered from the aoss (air oil seperate system) units

Of course slow & old guys can't tell the difference between 05 & 06 nor can they tell if a suspension is even actually working, as is evident by the number of KTM's sold with 350's leading the feild

* the cr 125 is a horrible bike , but you can drop it off a cliff! Those 2x4 frame bikes were Good for something hahaha
* the mechanical power valve cr was faster (the 2001 engine is what the service Honda uses) but the electronic power valve distributed the power better , thus the 2002-2007 model cr's you could ride them faster , although pinned on a dyno? The 2001 was faster

Honda never made faster two stroke engines than the 2000 & 2001 (125,250 & 500cc models)

It took WAAAY longer than expected, but I finally nailed down a bike. Today I picked up a very clean 2011 YZ125. Apparently, it hadn't even seen gas until last summer when it was sold for the first time.

The 05'-07' Honda CR125 does not have an electronic (RC) Power Valve.

CR125 02/03 are mechanical power valve. 04 is electric RC valve. 05-07 is mechanical

I know the OP ended up getting the Yamaha (no wrong choice in my opinion between the two), but there is way too much internet hearsay about the YZ being so much better. I've ridden my 04 and a new YZ on the same day, and I honestly liked my Honda better. The YZ was easier to keep in the powerband for sure, but the Honda didn't feel like it gave up much peak power if you knew how to ride it, and it definitely turned a hell of a lot better.

Thanks!

$3000

The dealer said they got it last year in an inventory swap with another dealer. The first dealer had never prepped it, so it was dry from 2011-2016. Then the new dealer sold it to a guy who apparently used it primarily to cruise around his neighborhood. He traded it back to them for a four stroke.
