Got to start off saying coverage has been great this year. Even the CBS coverage has been good. This wouldn't be a true Vital post without a little complaining. I want every sx next year to be live three hour coverage a la speed. What do the ratings show comparing the viewers of CBS vs Speed? Anyone know?

Don't respond and telli me back in the olden days we had to wait 6 months and trudge up hill in snow both ways to the only color tv in town to see it. I was around back then and am spoiled now.

That last couple of laps was pretty poor coverage seeing how they had time to edit it. CBS' local station finally, FINALLY, after many years has finally started showing the full hour program. Guess they got tired of all the bitching.

They'd rather show the governor and a guy from the sports commission then the entire main.

And before we hear from the old timers that had to walk to school in the snow up hill both ways realize this isn't the crews freshmen year covering SX, it's time to make improvements or feld should start shopping around.

I read/heard the CBS show gets much higher viewer numbers than Speed.
Much higher.
Simple math is, every home has CBS, if they have a TV.
Many TVs are tuned into CBS that don't even care about SX other than is whats on TV.
Speed is a niche channel.

Hardcore moto viewers only, regardless of network, would pull really low numbers in scale to TV business' view of viability.
Thank you casual viewers for pumping the numbers up

Just watch the shows from the early 2000s and it's been a huge upgrade. Camera work and production has been great this year. Even when they miss the action live, they always get it and show it shortly after. I get that gut-wrenching feeling every time the crowd goes nuts and the TV shows nothing exciting. But hey, it's tough to cover 20 riders at once, let alone 40 when the riders head outdoors. Just imagine being in the director's shoes and you have over a dozen screens showing the action and you got to pick one that goes on air at the right time. Very intense inside that TV truck!

The hardcore fan will always dig the Speed live coverage over CBS any day but the CBS coverage is only helping our sport. I can sacrifice some of the details and fluff on CBS just for the sake of the progress of the sport we love.

Got to agree, the camera work is light years ahead of where it was in the past. It is frustrating to hear the stands going crazy, but not see it on tv. At the same time, though I sometimes miss things even when attending. Over all, I have gotten spoiled by the three hour race coverage of speed. Perhaps we can convince CBS to do same evening coverage. Nothing else is on Saturday night.

Does anyone else have a problem on their TV, during the CBS broadcast, that you cannot see the the rider position/ names scrolling across the top during the race? The only thing I can see is how many seconds "someone" is behind the leader, the name and number are cut off at the top of the screen??? So the entire race the only positions I know which rider is in, is when they show them on TV.

I have read before that the production company is the same crew that does the Speed and CBS broadcasts. If that is true, why can I actually see the riders names and numbers scrolling across the top during the Speed broadcasts (all of them), while on the CBS broadcasts (all of them) the names are cut off at the top?

My first thought was the problem was because I was watching on a widescreen TV (like most people), so it was formatted different. But I watch the Speed broadcast on the same TV with no issues. So it is a CBS issue- that I have had on EVERY CBS broadcast this year. Really annoying to not know who is in what place unless they are actually shown on the TV screen. (which usually means they discuss/show about 5 out of 20 riders during the entire race.

Yes I know that the Carlsbad USGP used to be broadcast 6 months after the fact, so I should just be happy. But I also used to wait for Cycle News to show up in my mailbox 5 days after a race to see what happened. That was then, in 2012 CBS should be able to figure out how to show the scoring without cutting off the most important part (names) of what they are trying to broadcast.

Without being too too dramatic, missing the Dungey/Weimer pass was painful. We all saw how fast Dungey was coming, but they have to show (Brayton and Alessi?) right before it happens.

Then we hear a massive crowd reaction, but the camera stays firm...and then goes to Millsaps all alone at the front. What???

Thanks be to God for instant replay.

Anytime the race is not live, they give away the result of the 250 main. I've noticed that three times this year. How? Right when a rider makes a pass, during the race they will cut to the "pass of the race" clip. This makes me think the other person won't mount a charge back. The first time they did it, I thought eh maybe, the second time I thought okay this is bad, the third time (when Tomac passed Wilson in SLC), I thought that's ridiculous. I am not sure how many people are like me and don't want to see the results before watching the race itself, but for people like me that really sucks. Also they go to a commercial during the main and come back to Wilson on the ground. With a day to edit, that really happened? Wow.

As for the 450, it was pretty good for the most part except for not showing Dungey pass Weimer. That was pretty bad. Everyone watching was waiting to see those two get back together and how it would turn out, and yet we get to watch Brayton and Millsaps. Again with a day to edit, how does this happen? You miss something live, that's okay. You choose not to show it after a day to edit, that's pathetic.

I think the TV coverage has been excellent this year when the shows are live, and most of them are this year so that's a huge plus. No commercials during the main event and make sure you catch the important stuff when you have an opportunity to edit. That's all I ask.

In regards to what shows up on top of your screen, it has something to do with the type of TV you have, the setting (HD vs non-HD) and the type of broadcast you are receiving. Cannot explain it well, but you are not getting the entire broadcast. I think you are getting the HD broadcast resized to the non-HD screen size. RIght along the lines of what you mention in your third paragraph.

Yeah the numbers on CBS are a lot higher than Speed... Matthes talked about it on the PulpMx show a while back and said believe it or not there are a ton of people that don't have cable/dish and they will watch one channel all day long, not matter what's on, they're devoted to that one channel..... it's not to bad if you think about it. I'm on the east coast so normally it would be like 1AM before I got to see the main event so I only have to wait 11 or 12 hrs.... to me Speed gets the most epic fail this year with showing one Lites race on MONDAY at like 2PM!!!

agree 100%, I was thinking WTF, when they come back from a commercial and Wilson is laying on the ground, then they take their sweet ass time showing what actually happened to him. I thought my wife was going to come unglued, as wilson is her boy. lol As somebody else said, it is 2012, the camera crews, CBS/Speed have been doing this for a minute or two, they should know when the crowd goes crazy, it isn't for a battle back in 7th or so place. Even when Stewart hits the deck and is coming through the pack like a wild man, it isn't until he gets to the front do people start making noise. I am grateful for being able to watch these races the same weekend without a doubt, but the editing could use a little work.

Can't argue with that (the numbers) and given that, it is good for the sport. Getting MX/SX into the main stream is good for both the sport and for riders in general. Perhaps they could bring back an internet broadcast for the season. Even though I get Speed, I would still pay a subscription price for the season. Let Speed distribute the Internet Broadcast so that they don't loose money from having a competing broadcast. Shouldn't be much of a cost outlay to implement something like this as it is the same crew doing the filming. CBS would only loose small numbers from the hardcore fans, and even then it would probably be very small as many would watch the next day broadcast anyway.

Think I'll add this to my christmas list and hope. :-)

You can hear the cheering in the background for Dungy's pass on Weimer. I guess the director didn't think it was important to follow the guy who was blazing his way to the front.
