James: the defining part in James's career was the late arrival of the kx450,trying to hang with rc on a 2stroke in 05 was massive, supercross was fair game being the top three were 2stroke mounted but come outdoors he got owned and knew it, in 2004 in the 125's his talent could make up for the displacement but hanging with a 450 is ludicrous,06 in my eyes was his year to stamp it,he had equipment on par with rc and it showed sharing wins in the first round and I felt he had rc's number at high point until that step down crash...had it been an even playing field in 05 we may just have a different Stewart nowadays.

I think Honda switching to an aluminum frame for their CR 250 in 1997 definitely changed Jeremy's career - at least for that one year. And of course it ultimately lead to him and Yamaha joining up. Beyond Jeremy I guess you could say that it also lead to every other manufacturer (bar KTM) eventually following Honda with using aluminium as the chosen frame material (though personally I prefer steel).

Just two people, McGrath and Carmichael ! If those two had never came along imagen how many different champions we would have had. Shit, windham may had been the goat without those two

I think a picture of James face would have been better, he's crashed as much or maybe more on the Kawasaki and is catching up with his Suzuki.

If you're talking about a single ride that changed a riders' career, I'd say winning Hangtown in '91 is the shot in the arm that both Dowd and Henry needed. Those guys are the epitome of what the confidence of a win can do for a rider and his career.

As we all know every hero needs a nemisis to bring out the best in them,in saying that McGrath wouldn't be who he was had he not been pushed to the next level by emig, same can be said for rc with kw ,cr then js,evolution of the sport depends on this and having injured riders not competing Leeds to cake walks and uncontested championships won by those not having to ride outside of their comfort zone, alessi is no chump by any means but dungey is on cruise control, with that said he is always going to wear the easy championship tittle due to other riders injuries, although not his fault(mr consistency)..perhaps some day we will look back on his footprint in mx and define it as a pivotal role, the days of waxing the field 12 Moto's in a row then dnf'ing two and still claiming the red plate are gone.....consistency pays.raw speed only pulls chicks when your on the top step of the podium.

Osborne heading to Europe for a fresh start, now he has a Gieco ride.

Believe the hype T-shirts and the kill button incident changed Alessi's career.

Pourcel asking for too much money.

Josh Hill hanging with J-Law and trying the backflip pretty much ruined his up and coming career.

RJ getting landed on by Danny Storbeck ruined his career.

Those are a few of many.....

My view is that he was always too fast. When he was on minis he was always out front. Everybody wants to back a winner, so he got the best advice and the best equipment. Compare JS to Hannah who as an amateur got bad starts and had to fight through the pack at every race. The better off amateurs can get their suspension setup by pc or whoever, but the have-nots have to try and find their own settings. Consequently, if the have-not gets to pro level, he has a better understanding of how the suspension works. With JS it seems like when things are going his way, he is unbeatable. But if something goes wrong, he can't find a way to cope with it.
Another issue with his factory ride mentality is that he stays with a bike too long because of the support (or money) Seems like he is more comfortable on a rm than the yz. He went with sm a second year when he could have sold one of his lamborghinis and rode an rm on his own money.

Travis Pastrana's crash at Unadilla on the last lap in 01. On his way to a 1-1 finish. He never won another race.
