RM 250 Question

I am looking at a 2003 RM, I remember riding what I thought was a 03 a couple years ago and loved the way it handled, now I can't remember if it was a 03 or a 04. Is the 03 the " new " generation RM? anyone have one? I would be making it a hare scramble bike, would I need a flywheel wieght? Thanks guys-

It is the new generation where they copied the motor of the Yamaha from 02 (port timing etd). It'd be a great hare scramble bike, and depending on your power preference you may or may not need a flywheel weight.

Im a huge Zook fan, I race scrambles, and I tried the 2003 and did not like it. Cant comment on more than that, just didnt like how it felt at speed in the woods. FWIW, the front brake line routing is stoopid also.

The 2004 was the beginning of the really good ones. 2004 thru Present = Best RMs ever.

As for weights, Ive never ran any FW weights and do just fine without one. I did change the gearing: put a 14 toother up front.

yup in 04 they copied the yamaha motor....

Perhaps, but at least the Zook can turn. The '04 on up has an awesome powerplant and turns like no other.

They still cant figure out how to make a blue bike turn right...... Wink

My dad has an 05 with a PC pipe. Thing RIPS. I havent ridden anything older but the changes from like 03 and up werent anything TO monumental lol.

I'd stay away from the 03' if you can get your hands on an 04'. The 04' was a much better package. That being said, the 03' was a good bike. But the 04' and up are great.

I raced one in a local sx race a couple years back. it worked really really well for me. I had to borrow the bike because we had sold my bike and hadnt picked up my yz yet, but it was definatly decent.

I am still racing my 2004, and had some good results this year against 450s. (and some bad ones, too).
I am thinking about adding a flywheel. You can also mess with the power valve to mellow out the power hit, which is very strong.
Throw on a PC pipe and silencer and go for it. The only thing that throws me off about this bike (literally "throws me off" sometimes!) is the sketchy shifting. You gotta change your oil a lot to avoid missed shifts.

what oil are you using??? sometimes oil plays a factor in that....

The '03 won't turn. It's raked out too far or something. It runs great, but the handling is the only reason that I sold my '03. Even tried spending some money on the front end to help it out.

Shell Rotella.... good stuff, been running about 2 years now after readin some oil analysis info on it.... when i got my pit bike it was a bit notchy put rotella in and it smoothed it out quite a bit....

I've used ATF Type F in all my Zook 2 strokes with good results.
