Didn't SX have a "provisional" (start) rule at one time? I seem to remember Chad Reed using a provisional in 2008 when he had that bad get-off in Detroit in practice. I remember him having to line up for the LCQ, simply to satisfy the rule that he had start the race; then he made a lap and took it into the pits. He then got a 21st spot on the gate in the main. Millsaps ended up winning that night, Reed finished 12th and salvaged his championship.
Anyway, it got me thinking. Watching RD in the LCQ, and remembering how RV missed a main during the 11' season after going down on the start of an LCQ. Is the idea of a one-time provisional start something that needs to be considered? If so, how could it be implemented fairly?
