Provisional start...

Didn't SX have a "provisional" (start) rule at one time? I seem to remember Chad Reed using a provisional in 2008 when he had that bad get-off in Detroit in practice. I remember him having to line up for the LCQ, simply to satisfy the rule that he had start the race; then he made a lap and took it into the pits. He then got a 21st spot on the gate in the main. Millsaps ended up winning that night, Reed finished 12th and salvaged his championship.

Anyway, it got me thinking. Watching RD in the LCQ, and remembering how RV missed a main during the 11' season after going down on the start of an LCQ. Is the idea of a one-time provisional start something that needs to be considered? If so, how could it be implemented fairly?

I think if you don't qualify as rules state that there should be no provisional. If you can't get in through a heat or lcq why do you deserve to be in ?

I didn't like it. I'm glad they took it out. I think it was only implemented for two years, and Chad is glad it was too because it possibly saved him a championship.

That is a terrible rule. If it had not been in effect in '08 Windham probably would have won that championship.

Because you might be a (former) champion and you just had bad luck in both races (like Villopoto in 2011) ...

Going off of that does Davalos get a provisional for his entire career to this point? At some point you create your own luck. No one else is twisting the throttle, turning the bars and making that decision for you.

This isn't NASCAR. We don't have a lucky dog to make the racing "more exciting" err... fabricated.

There is still a provisional for qualifying for the night show

From the rulebook:

4.17 Qualifying
e. In the 450SX class only, a rider who is currently in the Top 10
in points who fails to make the Fast 40 in qualifying practices
will be placed on the 21st gate pick in the first heat race. A
second (NQT10) in qualifying practices will have the 21st gate
pick in the second heat race. Up to a maximum total of 2
NQT10 riders can be placed in each heat race. They will be
placed in their respective heat race in priority of their position
in the top 10. (For the first race of the season: according to
previous year's final standings).

I was literally just wondering about that rule too (and if it was still in place) .... Didn't RV2 not qualify for a main in 2012? My memory isn't super clear,but I thought thats what happened... I believe the same race JS7 crashed out of the main as well.

That was 2011, and yea, that was the same race where James crashed out of the main.
