This topic seems to come up at least once or twice each season. When did the rules change about cutting the track? Back in the (G)olden days of MX, if you went off the track, you had to reenter in the same spot. I don't recall what the penalty was but it was something specific and harsh like being docked a lap. They made it so harsh that taking the time to reenter at the point of exit would be the best option for the rider.
It seems to me, the current rule is too judgmental. Just the fact that someone has to decide if the rider gained an advantage is based on an opinion, then they penalize the person some arbitrary number of seconds. This again is based on some unnamed persons opinion.
Being a former umpire, any rules that are based on someones judgement are bad rules. At least if it's a cut and dry rule (rider x leaves the track but didn't return at the same spot so he's docked a lap) then that would eliminate all the controversy.
BTW, This isn't meant to be a bash jlaw thread. I just brought it up because we seem to talk about this topic every season.

Just about every weekend, you'll see a guy jump off the side of the jump, keep on going and pull back on the track two or three jumps away. As long as he doesn't pass anyone, thats fine in today's rules.
Ferry came from way out in the middle of nowhere and crossed behind the yard-sale to pass through the infield section but then hung himself on a block.
Short picked himself up out of the middle of the whole mess and then took off on Lawrence's cut-the-track line.
Seems like a pretty gray area, rule and ethics wise, but nobody who really matters in the decision seems to think it was a big deal. I can't imagine the AMA passing on a chance to punt J-Law again. To really see it clearly if places were gained, you would need one of those John Madden play charts.
I do think they should have to re-enter at or before their exit point but sometimes that just isn't possible so they made the rule what it is.
Right, wrong or indifferent at the end of the day if the officials don't call it....it didn't happen.
and peeldick...i expected more from you. you rolled into mt with a paid sub and wanted to make friends, you gave us the sympathy shit with yer f(*king brown eye dilemma. now yer sub is out and you wanna play BMOC on vital...you fucking twat. get out of my sight dork...

Pit Row
please answer dork
the tether thing was a joke. he was getting passed all night long, and stayed in the same line.
lighten up
and it was a fuggin joke. i've said in other threads that he rode great. i think if it weren't for his line in the whoops, he would have had 3rd on lock. but he was getting eaten alive there.
seriously man, chill out a bit. i'm sorry you don't get the humor, but that's how its all meant
thing is, i've only said one negative thing about a rider, that i actually meant, and that was about Ryan Dungey's tear ducts being more productive than most normal racers...
and speaking of MT, i'm coming back in due time
