VOLCOM TO DEVOTE BRAND FOCUS ON CORE BOARD SPORTS AND EXIT MOTOCROSS

Costa Mesa, CA. – June 17, 2013 – Volcom today said it will intensify its focus on the
foundational core sports upon which the brand was founded over 20 years ago and exit
motocross. The company officially launched its motocross program in 2009 and amassed an
impressive riding team of world-class athletes, including superstar Ryan Villopoto, the 2011, 2012
and 2013 AMA Supercross Champion. As the first company to formally blend the 3 primary
board sports together from day one, Volcom will remain devoted to skate, snow and surf, along
with music and art.

“In an increasingly competitive and specialized global market it is imperative that we continue to
simplify the Volcom brand message so that we can achieve maximum differentiation and voice
amplification,” said Jason Steris, Volcom’s CEO. “We have been extremely proud to have been a
part of the motocross family for several years. However, pressing forward with all of our
emphasis on board sports is the right direction for Volcom for the long term.”

“I am very proud to have been part of the Volcom motocross program from the beginning and am
grateful for the warm reception and regular acceptance from a world-class community of athletes,
teams, media, agents and promoters,” said Troy Powell, Volcom’s MX Marketing Senior Manger.

“I understand this was a difficult decision for Volcom but I support the company's vision and the
need to retain its focus on its core boarding sports. Combined with my earlier years in the
Volcom surf program, it has been a tremendous experience being part of an amazing company
and I now look forward to new ventures.” Powell joined Volcom in 1996 and will always be a part
of the Volcom family.

“The motocross team has done an exceptional job helping our company gain an admirable
standing in this sport,” said Ryan Immegart, Volcom's Senior Vice President of Marketing. “With
Troy at the helm, our accomplishments are many and I am thankful for his stewardship and
relentless passion toward making an indelible mark in motocross. As well, we could not have
achieved so much without Ryan Villopoto and the rest of our team riders.”

I guess they see the writing on the wall as well.

They won't be the last

Well that make sense, because when I heard Ryan rattle it off with his other sponsors, I had no idea what is was, and what it had to do with MX/SX.

Remember the logo that molested Baggett on the podium after he won his title last year? Volcom.

Probably had to do with the Volcom mascot getting booted off the podium last summer. Laughing

I've seen the logo many times, but never knew what it was that they were selling.

See, having the fastest guy in the sport spew your name on the podium, really isn't good marketing afterall...

Sad to see. I'm a big fan of the company and was very happy when they got involved with moto.

I've been wearing volcum since hs, at least 15 years. Always new it was a board sports thing. I wasn't surprised when I saw RV wearing it. I thought of it as an "extreme" sport kinda clothing/brand. Trendy cali stuff. Didn't know so many people haven't heard of it. That's to bad their bailing out, but I understand. RV and BB wear it and no one has ever heard of it. All that tv time and it apparently didn't get across to some of the already small Moto community. I now the young pep know what it is!Blink

There is major re-structuring with surf brands due to lagging sales.

Quiksilver is cleaning house.
La Jolla group (O'neill, Rusty, MM) replaced its CEO.
Billabong stock has crashed in the middle of buyout negotiations.

I'm sure Volcom's move is due to surf industry issues rather than MX industry issues.

Volcom is such a large company in the younger generation. the moto fan base makes up a tiny tiny percentage of their customers and pulling out of moto won't put any noticeable dent in their profits. they could pay the fastest man on the planet or they could stay away from moto all together and it really makes no difference to them business wise, they're probably realizing this. im willing to bet RV is not cheap

That sucks. Their Thor collab gear was awesome. I also think this is a pretty dumb decision. I can understand that having Pro Circuit and Villopoto on your payroll isn't going to give you much return on investment, but still... Painting helmets and making some gear worn in supercross most likely got them lots more exposure at a fraction of the cost of sponsoring a race team.

Blame the French! Volcom is owned by a big French group now, Pinault Printemps Redoute which changed its name a few months ago to Kering. They also own Gucci, Puma, Stella McCartney, Boucheron, etc...

Ah yes that Pinault guy stole Salma Hayek from me. His family was worth 7 billion when Salma left me. They also own Yves St. Laurent.

I used to really like Volcom. They appeared to be different to many mainstream brands and have unique marketing.

Ever since they sold out to a huge French corporation, I find the slogan 'Youth Against Establishment' hilarious.

I had no idea what Volcom was, what they did, or that they sponsored a rider in MX.

I watched Volcom start from a couple of guys sticking paper stickers everywhere, one of my sales reps was friends with Tucker who was one of the founders. They deny it but I've believed since day one that it was Quicksilver from the start, the whole act was such a joke. I believe Tucker was genuine and probably why he stepped away so early. There have been some fake companies out there but Volcom has been at the top of the list since the beginning. People put down companies like Fox for selling out while thinking Volcom was hardcore. Too bad they're taking money out of the riders pockets but good riddance.

I've been in the motorcycle bizz over 25 years. Raced motocross as a pro back in the 80's and have seen all the ups and downs.

We love this sport, but outside of motorcycle riders there are very little fans of our sport. Bike sales are still way off and that is a leading indicator of where our business is. I'm not just talking dirt bikes, its across the board. The only segment in our industry (powersports) that is up is side-by-sides. Sales of those have been strong for the last 5 years and still growing. Guess what, there is no racing associated with side-by-side's.

Fox is one of my competitors, but I applaud them for being able to sell their product to the masses. I don't think Fox has any plans to come back to only marketing their product to moto only. They would sell a lot less then they are now. Same thing with Oakley.

BTW....saw the new 2014 THOR Volcom gear yesterday and it looks sick. Hopefully it will still come out.

Sellouts = Lear jets
Sticking to their core, yah bro = riding the bus

Hate to see sponsor $ go elsewhere but seems like a waste of money for Volcom. It would be like Dunlop sponsoring a Pro surfer

I have no idea what Volcom sold. I assume it was clothing or sun glasses. They have a nice little marker buoy logo with edges.

I do know that Volcom came right after Vans and right before Toyota of Escondido in the bland monotonous PC podium speech.

Seems a large number of us know nothing about them. Podium Speach Marketing is so effective that the riders get fined for not doing it.
