Poor old bike... Is it weird that I look at a neglected dirt bike and feel sad and think somebody should save it, but would look at a kitten in a shelter and say "yep, probably time to put that one down"?

Either way, it sure as hell doesn't make me sad enough to chunk out $900 for it!!

I guess if the guy took an offer of like $650 and you were set up to restore the bike to turn it over..might be a deal..knowing me..I would be back linning up for a vintage race...I can't afford to get hurt..

I feel the say way. Some people would take in stray dogs and I tend to take in stray dirtbikes.

You guys aren't going to start putting commercials on TV that make me feel like an asshole for not helping those bikes are you?

Got this one for ten bucks off the side of the road at a mini storage. Just about 4 grand later.....LOL It got its first race in last weekend and it looked good and sounded great. The 79 was an ugly bike in stock form but with a few changes they can be one of the best looking bikes out there.

We'd need to find a hot female celebrity to champion our cause for the commercials.... maybe Leann Tweeden. Brett Michaels could write a really sad song to go along with it.

You see folks, what Joe did here is actually a piece of magic.

He turned a 1979 CR125 into a 1980 CR125 for four grand, LOL!

Hows this?

Welcome to the Save the Dirtbikes (STD). Everyday there are thousands of dirtbikes around the world that have been neglected by their owners. These bike are forced to live in horrible conditions such as dirty sheds, under porches, and some are just left outside in the rain. These bike are suffering from dirty air filters, blown fork seals, bald tires, and yes folks some even have the number 69 on them. For example in Portland Oregon this poor 1979 CR125 may never see a track again, may never have the chance to enter a vintage race and may face a life of goon riding or end up on ebay as spare parts. We here at STD wish to put a stop to the neglect of dirtbikes, for just the cost of 4000 cups of coffee a bike can be saved….Help become a part of STDs….and save the dirtbikes.

It would be like the ASPCA commercials, I'd have to change the channel whenever it came on.

I don't know if I would say it is too much, but there are a lot of 79 CR 125's out there. Depends on condition and what your intentions for it are. If you were going to do a complete resto, I'm not so sure a nice bike is worth any more than a not so nice bike. If you want it, try for $500.00.

STD!!!!!!!!! That was a beautiful intro paragraph.... I felt myself getting very emotional and a little misty eyed!

In all seriousness, that price seems very steep because I'm sure 'needs piston and ring' is code for "it ain't running."

If you try searchtempest.com, you can do a radius search of all craigslist listings in nearby markets, you might be able to find something better or cheaper.

And of course, it is craigslist, so why not lowball him and see what happens.

STD case file # 2.0

A tragic case of neglect and abuse......

Found huddled behind the owners squalid out buildings, this sorry CR500 is not only without home it's handicapped too. Missing an engine after a tragic accident, few are interested in rescuing such a "challenged" bike. Can't you or someone you know help this poor machine?

Looks like an excellent candidate for a 450-500cc 70's era air cooled 2-stroke engine swap. Woohoo

Actually the 1980 CR125 in stock form is still on the ugly side. Front end looks jacked up, ugly fender out front and the fuel tank looks like it was improperly installed by a blind person. Has alwaysbeen one of my favorites though. Fun bike.

Now the 80 CR250 looks great by comparison. Tank is leveled out and the bike has a better stance. The front fender looks better too.

Hmm the 80 model 125s we got in oz had the same look as the 250, well the one i got did, unless someone modded it??

I dont remember from 1980 (was riding rm250t,) but when i was doing vintage in the 90s i picked up a very good condition 1980 125 so thats what i'm basing in on.

loved that bike and i was a yammy 125 guy, though because it was an 80 model it was ineligible for the pre 80 class we had.
raced it once in the pre 80class, asked all the other guys if was okay and wouldnt take any points/trophies,
just wanted to get a race on it (no evo class then)

Newman your 79 looks bad ass! Always love to see your projects. Wasnt the big deal about the 80 model a new semi-double cradle frame and center exhaust port? I see the frame on your 79 is completely different.
