okay so let me start off with i didnt have a ps3 or xbox till about a year ago and before that i had a ps2 that i havent had for quite a few years so i was out of gaming for a few years so when i got my xbox, alive had just came out so thats what i got. i had untamed on ps2 and loved it so i figured id love that, which i actually do. so when i came across reflex a couple months ago for super cheap i thought id go ahead and buy that too since everyone seems to love it more then reflex. so getting to my question, i am seem to never have traction on reflex, i just slide around everywhere. is this normal? do i just suck and need to quit playing alive and adapt to reflex or am i doing something wrong? i dont get it.

You're not doing anything wrong. One of Reflex's biggest flaws is the complete lack of traction. That and the too large scaled tracks (which plagued all the MVA games until Alive) held the game back. Of course, none of the newer games had a real points series so that was a complete continued oversight.

You can tune the bike in Reflex for sticky tires but honestly it does very little to improve the situation.

For that reason....and the more realistic track scales....Alive is my favorite though I honestly only love the JS7 tracks and the SX tracks (though they too are too short.)

Still, I think Alive was heading in the right direction with the proper scaling and some actual grip and weight and traction to the bike. Sadly, we will never see a sequel since THQ killed the guys chances of that.

I would have to disagree with Reflex being too slick. One of the most awesome things about Reflex for me is the lack of traction because it requires a ton of practice and a delicate touch to put down 5 consistent laps. You have to by VERY light on the controller sticks, in fact for the outdoor tracks you can actually get round most of them with just one stick. It's all about momentum and learning the tracks. This is key.

In the garage section, don't bother setting you power to anywhere but for high speed. Slick tyres work better at high speed but worse when the track gets rough and the smooth lines are gone; forcing you to slow down. You'll have to find a compromise that works best for you. Same with suspension; harder is good early on but can be tricky after lap 3 when things get rough.

Well, there you go. 2 complete different opinions. With both of them legitimate. I still disagree, though. I'm ok with it requiring a light stick. There are simulations out there that also require very delicate stick control. However, Reflex just feels like you are on ice and that and the super exaggerated scaling and jumps just make it an inferior game to Alive.

But with that being said I'm not sure how great a game with only 4 or so good tracks can be considered, either which is kinda what you get with Alive.

It is all a matter of opinion. Reflex has better tracks and more tracks but the slip and slide play and scaling hurt it. Alive got that part better (in my opinion) but there really isn't much to do in the game since they did not release the SX DLC.

I agree with him. Yes the bikes feel like they get no traction but if you look at real supercross tracks they are usually very slick except for maybe st. louis and daytona supercross. I have been playing the game for a few years now so I have learned to adapt to the slickness and lay down some very quick times. It takes a lot of practice and can get very frustrating, but once you master the game it is so much fun. Also learn how to whip glitch as it will drastically improve your times.

I hated Reflex because it had no points series, and the computer racers just crashed all the time. You could never have a good battle like the PS2 games.

Yea it didnt have a point series and the computer riders are worse than the guy in "Brandons First Race." But overall that is by far the best mx game for any console out right now. Unlike Alive it takes skill to improve and get better. Mx vs. atv unleashed is a very close second in terms of best mx game. It wasnt very realistic but it was also difficult to master and took me a lot of practice to perfect my lap times on tracks. Everyone has their own opinion though so im sure we wont agree.

Yeah, it is about impossible to battle in Reflex. The collision is too sensitive and the AI are pretty much on kamikaze missions taking you and themselves out constantly.

Despite it's way too soft suspension I still get the best battles from EA's Supercross 2000 for the N64. That, coupled with full real riders, announcers, heats, LCQs, 20 lap mains and a full replica SX points series make that game very ahead of it's time. And the physics are very realistic for the time. They, too, are a bit touchy but do have some weight to them.

I'm probably alone on that island though. =)

Another thing I like about Supercross 2000 is that the pace isn't exagerrated. It isn't too fast like a lot of the games are.

As far as battles I enjoy Supercross 2000 which you can really go back and forth on during a whole race and also really enjoy the first turn battles in Alive and MTX Mototrax. MTX is a very good game but my main problem with the game is it feels a bit too fast to be honest. Still, it did a lot right.

I play all the games to be honest. Reflex as well. And MUD which is too arcade but you can have some excellent battles against the AI which is very good....probably the best.

The battles in Reflex are great if you ride with people that can controll their bike, and there is lot of traction if you know what line to choose. Practice my friend Smile

That's just the game. It's not bad but Alive is better besides having to buy bikes with actual money

What is the whip glitch?

I just got going again in Alive after lots of time off. Are the 250's faster than the 450's or is it just me?

If you are playing Alive then the power difference between the 250 and 450s is pretty significant. Reflex on the other hand it is still noticeable but you can still run about the same lap times as the 450s. The whip glitch is a technique used in Reflex to jump a little bit farther than usual and it can be very useful when used properly. It takes some time to master but once you get to where I am it is basically second nature.

Here is a whip glitch tutorial

Thanks buddy! Ok, I got the whip down pat for Reflex for sure.

What about Alive for the 250/450? You are saying the power difference is significant? I tried it last night but only in supercross and the 250 felt faster and turned better. I tried the 450 and was 2 seconds a lap slower but I've used the 250 probably 95% of the time on the game so maybe with more practice the 450 is faster?

I'm trying to nail down the triple quad section on the Williamsburg track so more power would be good.

I always run the 250. My buddy always runs the 450. We were playing around at the JS7 compound hitting some different transfers in free ride and going through the big grassy area I was catching up to him on my 250F. You can hit the triple quad easily and consistently on a 250 if you have the Clutch Master perk enabled and you clutch it just right. The clutch boost on the 250 is far greater than on the 450. The only advantage I see to the 450 is on severely rutted out tracks. They just seem a lot more stable in the choppy stuff. JMO. You on XBOX or PS3?

I'm on PS3. It's been awhile for me, I've been on retirement from alive. I just rode a few tracks with both bikes and my lap times are way faster on the 250 than 450. I also managed to nail the triple quad once.

Does the clutch boost only work at full power or it doesn't matter? I think it works with only a little bit of power. Fast guys must clutch the shit out of their bike to go fast. I miss the days of just pressing the X button only haha...

From my short experience with the game I though there was a significant power difference between the 250 and 450. Concerning the clutch, use the clutch perk like he said and make sure you load it fully right before you land. Good luck with alive though, Im gonna sitck with reflex.

Thanks for the advice. When I get a chance to play it's always Reflex but I'm on an Alive run right now getting back my skills. I've gone back and forth since Alive was released to keep me interested. Alive ends up usually pissing me off plus I'm into all the supercross tracks Reflex has, it's a great game.

Yeah both games have their strengths. Regardless of taste what ultimately hurts them is a lack of tracks and particularly in Reflex's case (at least for the single player) - abominable AI.

Since Reflex went to the PC I was hoping a huge community would grow around it like it did with MCM2. No idea whether it's possible or not but for PC version at least, I think a "No Crash" mod for the AI would vastly increase the replay value in SP. Without the AI committing suicide at every opportunity they'd probably make for decent racing. I hear MUD has great AI though but then again the physics are a bit sub par.....

It's frustrating how all the various aspects we want - competitive AI, good physics, points championship etc; are scattered across so many individual titles.

Add me on PS3. LTR450865. I have both games but haven't played Reflex in FOREVER. Tried it the other day because I miss racing SX and I SUCKED.

Ironically enough, the game that comes closest in all the things we want is probably MUD. (I'm talking console hear guys!) It is way off in the physics part but the full FIM license, all the gear, bikes, riders, tracks (though no where near replica), teams all without extra costs. Plus a full, legitimate points series (none of the 3 lap 5 race series junk), 2 moto formats, gate picks, holeshot awards, red plate on leader board, intelligent, competitive AI.

In it's first offering, MUD really got the design of the game closer than anything we've seen since Supercross 2000 as far as replicating the sport.

But physics wise they really went the wrong way and the control is very dumbed down. But with that being said I think it is still, overall, one of the best moto games there is despite it's arcade approach to the gameplay as it did do a lot right. Now if we can just get a MUD 2 with more realistic physics then we are really getting some where.

Yeah as far as being good for your rider, Reflex is awesome. I just hate the fact that there's no point series and the computer riders just constantly wad up, usually taking you with them. MX Unleashed and Supercross Circuit were so good. A combination of those two games would be epic.
