Thomas Covington, retired in October 2020, has reappeared in the off-road industry as the FIM World Supercross Championship's new Director of Racing. The position was previously held by Kurt Nicoll, who will move on at the end of the calendar year.
Covington will assume the position at the first round of WSX, the Grand Prix of Argentina, this weekend. Nicoll will still be on site, helping his successor acclimatize to the new position.
"It's been incredibly rewarding to help build World Supercross' global growth and elite racing," reflected Nicoll. "Working alongside such a passionate and talented team has been a privilege, and I'm proud of what we have achieved together. The championship is in such a strong position for the future, and I'm confident that Thomas' experience and energy will help take World Supercross to even greater heights."
"It's an incredible honor to join World Supercross in this capacity at a very exciting time for the championship. Having been on both sides of motorsport – as a racer and an organizer – I understand what it takes to create an environment where athletes can perform at their best and fans can experience the sport at its most thrilling. I'm excited to build on the foundation Kurt has established and help take World Supercross to the next level across the globe." – Thomas Covington
Covington, a four-time winner in the FIM Motocross World Championship, is well suited to help steer WSX in the future. Not only has he learned invaluable lessons from his father, Mitch Covington, but he has raced on each continent as an MXGP rider and most recently managed international powerboat and jet ski events.
Arguably underrated, Covington finished fourth (2017) and fifth (2018) in the MX2 class in the FIM Motocross World Championship as a Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider. After transferring back to the United States, he made two main events in the 250SX East class.
