Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing's Cooper Webb continues to confirm his position at the top of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross championship standings. Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium marked his third win in four races and his sixth consecutive top two finish. Additionally, his series lead has grown to 15 with just eight rounds remaining.
Following a near-perfect main event, where he led every single lap en route to his 28th career win, Webb jumped into the post-race press conference and addressed the media. Various hot topics were tackled in the media session, including the number of crashes that he had throughout the day.
Press Conference: Surely a win offsets any adversity you encountered earlier today, but how was your range of emotions today?
Cooper Webb: It was all over the place today. The crash was not great but, luckily, I was able to walk away. The bike was pretty mangled, which put an end to that. I made a costly mistake in the heat race, while in a great position, by tucking the front. I was super fired up after that and wanted to go out in the main event to get back on point. I was able to do that with a great start and made it happen. It was a great race for me leading every lap. I was able to just ride my laps and I am stoked on how the night finished.
Tonight, you got the holeshot in the main event and looked very good at the beginning of the race. When Chase [Sexton] is behind you, you do not know if you have that speed. Take us through the mental mindset of, "Where can I push on this track and am I going to be able to beat Chase Sexton?"
I think Justin Barcia got the holeshot, but I was able to get around him quickly. I just put some good laps down. It was one of those tracks that you could override and make mistakes. As you said, I have yet to lead from the front and have Chase in second. I think he rode good all day, so with this speed then hopefully we can put that to bed.
Were there any specific adjustments made that made a difference in your performance tonight?
We made a small bike change after the heat race and that seemed to be a good direction. Other than that, no big changes.
You got out front you sprinted away for a bit. When Chase got into second, did you think, "Game on! He is going to be pushing to the front?" Did you feel good about your speed when you maintained that gap?
I knew when he got into second that he would be on it. I tried to keep hitting my marks – I felt good and had good lap times. My plan was to do that as long as I could and I knew it would be a battle once we got into lappers. I felt I had the speed and grit to be able to do what I did. He made the mistake and that opened it up for me, but I was ready to go tonight.
Do you believe you are mentally the strongest when you are sitting on the line of a 450 main event? To come back from those crashes earlier was impressive.
I would like to think so. It has been a big part of my career. I have always been good mentally. I look at those mistakes, which some guys allow to bother them, but I feel I ride better. I do not recommend crashing in order to put yourself in a good zone, but sometimes that is what happens and it can get the best out of me.
