Is this the sweetest-looking and most feature-packed KTM yet? We'd say so. The KTM 350 SX-F.

Wow, has KTM come a long way in the last few years. We can remember a time (at least for motocross use) when they were more of a high-priced novelty than something you'd seriously consider as your primary race bike. But they've made steady progress, and for 2011, they're pulling out all the stops, with a trio of four-strokes ready to go head-to-head with everyone else, and open some eyes and minds. But they also haven't forgotten their two-stroke lineup, and offer everything from 50cc to 250cc race bikes. But this time around we're going to focus on the new 350 SX-F, and seriously updated 250 SX-F.

Call the myth that KTM would never have a linkage system on their MX bikes busted. The linkage is found on all the four-stroke models, while the two-stroke bikes will retain KTM's familiar linkless PDS system.

This year all of KTM's MX bikes have a new chromoly frame that uses a variety of tubes in interesting shapes to increase torsional rigidty and reduce longitudinal stiffness (it helps absorb energy from big rear wheel impacts). Other benefits claimed for the chassis by KTM? That it's lighter than aluminum, is easier to maintane and work on, as well as providing more room for the fuel tank and other components on the bike.

Depending on whether the bike is a two- or four-stroke, the rear suspension is either their familiar PDS (linkless) design, or a new linkage system for the four-strokes. KTM found that the different engine characteristics and center of gravity of the two- and four-stroke bikes, that the PDS system was a better solution for the pre-mix bikes. The PDS system will also remain in the offroad lineup.

There are new cast aluminum designs for the swingarm, whether on the PDS or linkage bikes. That gives them more latitude in their design, and greater consistency among the individual parts, as well as the flex characteristics they wanted for the new frame.

The WP shock is desiged to handle the higher shaft velocities that you'll find on the linkage system,

As far as the shock components, of course you've got two different shocks for the PDS design still found on the two-stroke models, as well as the newer linkage design on the SX-F bikes. At 410mm and with a 108mm stroke, the PDS shock is now longer than before, and uses a different rising rate profile. The linkage shock is 490mm with a 136mm stroke, and is specifically designed for the linkage bikes with a new piston and bushing design. The goal there? To be better able to handle the increased shock shaft velocities by providing a consistent seal, as well as reducing friction.

A 48mm WP fork handles the front suspension duties.

Up front on the full-size SX models, you'll find the latest-gen WP 48mm fork, which features WP closed cartridge tecnhology, and they're mated to a set of CNC-machined KTM aluminum triple clamps.

A quick look at any photo will show you the sleek new bodywork, which is designed to be slim, but with good contact points for hanging onto the bike. Add in a longer rear fender and an airbox that doesn't require any tools for access, and you've got a KTM that looks better than ever.

The new 350cc engine. Five years from now, will we look at this as a novelty, or an engine that changed the face of motocross? Time will tell.

Of course a lot of the attention this year is focused on the all-new 350cc powerplant. This DOHC engine features an extremely short stroke (57.5mm), and an 88mm bore, four titanium valves, and a 13,000 RPM limit. It's all controlled by a 42mm Keihin throttle body that monitors the usual functions, like temperatures (hot and cold), altitude, etc. Like many of the other EFI systems we've seen, there's a separate mapping tool that allows you to change EFI and ignition maps. All of it is mated to a five-speed transmission.

Yep, the 350 features the magic button electric start, but can also be outfitted with a Power Parts kit to retrofit a kickstarter, and give you the option of removing the E-start, or using both.

The 250 also has fuel injection, and an option to add the E-start.

We like smart features like an easy-to-access airbox, and love the high-end goodies sprinkled over the bike.

Of course, all the KTMs are still chock-full of name-brand goodies, like a hydraulic clutch, Renthal bar and grips, Twin Air filter, CNC-machined hubs, Brembo brakes, wave rotors, and Excel rims.

Check out the following two videos to get a look at a real-world impression of how the new 250 and 350 worked on the track.
