I like working on and riding motorcycles I used to do it a lot but joined the army and sold off most of my toys. Now I'm out of the army and looking to get back into motorcycles. I have a jeep rubicon that is pretty much maintenance free and I realized I missed motorcycles and fiddling around in the garage. I was lucky to have my brother store all my tools while I was in the army so I had everything but a project.

I started looking on craigslist for project bike and found an 1988 rm250 locally for cheap ... Maybe too cheap but that's to be decided later. The rm250 has been my favorite bike since I was a kid I wanted disc brakes front and rear and was thinking about 1990. After seeing the 88 I liked the looks other than the front and rear fenders. So I brought her home and now I'm up to my elbows in bad bearings and rusty parts.

It could have been worse .... acid ... or melted and fused ... I still haven't been able to drive the bearing seats out. I don't think I have a salvageable bearing on the frame so far. I would have liked a photo of the look on my face when that dust cover came off and that bearing and dirt...

I was starting to takeover sandman768 thread so I figured I better start my own. I have too many questions to be messing up his awesome thread. I was looking for a project bike last year and found a cr250 that looked good but when showed up to look at it it turned out to be a nightmare ... Everything...

Crank seems like it was already done. Looking at my old head a lot of damage happened when this bike came apart last time. I think this crank is fresh looking at it and the hot rod. It also had very little play ( rod , the crank had none). A new crank bearing kit is only $50 but I...

I tried laying it on a piece of glass and it's close but if you push on one side or the other you can feel it rock a little. I ordered a bunch of parts and a MANUAL. Hopefully the manual has some guidance. It's rusty and looks bad but it was worn uniformly and has no ridge. It's measures...

I was just out in the garage and starting to undo the bolts on the piston sleeve when I resized the piston has no carbon build up... Am I breaking down a fresh rebuild. If I break down the motor do I need a new ring ... I have always been fixing a motor when I tore it down before...

Thanks for the tips... I have learned to not beat on things ( mostly ). Every time the hammer comes out of the toolbox it cost me money. So far my bike has come apart pretty easy the old owner at least kept it in covered storage. Is it worth plating the nuts and bolts or should I look at...

I don't usually join forums but I wanted to make sure I could find your thread again . I'm a few months and a lot of cash behind you on the restoration of my 88 rm250. Picked mine up with a cr250 neither had run in about 5 years. I was able to get both running in about two hours...
