7/15/2017 6:48am How is your PW50 going now dirtdiva? Started mine up today finally... I believe it was just the dodgy old spark plug cap that was giving me problems. Started quicker than it used to and is much quieter now too. The rattle noise seems to be sorted which is great. Next problem is that the exhaust isn't sealing properly with...

temppp Added a reply to PW50 spark problem
7/15/2017 6:26am Thought I would update this for anyone who might come across it when having their own problems. I believe the only problem with my bike was the spark plug cap not keeping a solid connection with the spark plug. Didn't do anything with the stator so the above numbers must be acceptable to get it running. I've had other people...

6/20/2017 9:17am I'm having spark problems with my 1992 model - http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Tech-Help-Race-Shop,42/PW50-spark-problem… Can you take a quick look and then post all your various ohm readings? Post them here in this topic/thread to keep all your information in one place. It will help troubleshoot your problem and I would also like to compare with my own results too. If you need more...

6/11/2017 9:52am Well I found the charging coil resistance but it's not where it should be, according to the manual. (manual) Pick up coil: White/Red - Black : 18-22Ω (mine) same wires: 20.3Ω (manual) Charging coil: Black/Red - Black : 297-363Ω (mine) same wires: nothing. Black/Red - White : 301Ω (manual) Lighting coil: White - Black : 0.57-0.69Ω (mine) nothing. Can't find...

6/10/2017 10:31am Yeah, many attempts. After I installed the top end I put it all back together, filled the tank and tried to start it but nothing happened. Next day I checked the wires and tried to start it again, still nothing. It's getting fuel and I think the compression feels fine when I cover the spark plug hole (don't have a...

6/9/2017 10:42am Thanks for the quick reply. One frame/coil mount is painted, so I left that. The other had some rust which I sanded off. Also cleaned up the ground wire connector. I sanded the rust off the top/bottom of the ignition coil mounts, haven't done the "outside" on them but I don't know if that matters. I'm using 120grit sandpaper, is...
temppp Started a new thread PW50 spark problem
6/9/2017 9:09am I've had other posts on here about this bike but the basic story is that the bike ran (with other issues) and then after installing a new complete top end I can't get it to produce proper spark. I have rested the spark plug on the head and have seen what I would describe as a bright blue spark but...

6/1/2017 9:16am Tried to start it today but unfortunately it did not go well. Gave it a number of kicks to start with and nothing happened. Then tried with the throttle slightly open and wide open which made it sound different but still wouldn't start. Realised something was wrong and stopped. To remove the motor (while installing the new top end) I...

5/31/2017 10:52am Yeah, I guess you should almost expect this for the price. Both bolts are in now, everything back together. The exhaust didn't seem to line up quite right but it's on. Just need to fill up the tank and see how it goes... Using the kickstarter requires noticeably more effort now. Hopefully that's a good thing and not just because...

5/29/2017 10:11am Yeah, torque specs from the manual say it should be M6 x 1.0mm which is standard. The bolts I had on the old one were not Yamaha and are a bit smaller at the tip which is why they start fine but then jam. These are 20mm length which is what I was going to replace with unless that sounds...

5/26/2017 10:07am The bolts to join the exhaust to the cylinder feel far too tight and I don't want to force them in... Are the threads on these cylinders supposed to be the same or are they smaller? Perhaps it's just paint or something in there? I'll get new bolts and also see how a size smaller fits but that will have...

5/25/2017 10:09am Thanks but I can get them fairly cheap locally if/when I need them. Appreciate the offer though. I'll leave the current rubber things in there for now. I've been sick so had to put the PW50 on hold for a while. I went to try and match the circlip today but the closest they had was too small. I put...

5/12/2017 9:11am I could try asking a couple more people if they have a suitable torque wrench. I had one offered to me but the low end of it's range was well above what's needed for this. I could always take the motor in to a dealer/mechanic and ask them to do it if necessary. I had thought of trying to match...

5/11/2017 10:37am I was able to get a quick clearance measurement with a feeler gauge and I think it's fine. Smallest size I had was .038mm (.0015in) which I tested in a few spots. Might have been a bit tighter on top. The old piston/cylinder was roughly 0.1mm (0.004in) The range according to the manual is .034-.047mm (.0013-.0019in) I poked a magnet...

5/4/2017 8:35pm Great, that's reassuring. I may take it in next week and see what they would charge, as I will only be a couple minutes away. If it's free/cheap enough it might be good just out of curiousity. This kit only cost $30.98. They are normally ~$55 and up to buy here but ebay had a $20 promotion off which worked...

5/4/2017 11:19am I borrowed a feeler gauge today but unfortunately it didn't have small enough blades to check the clearance. I checked my spark plugs gaps while I had it though and both NGK plugs were fine but the one that came with the kit was too big, .8 or .9 something millimetres. Do you ever use those no-name ones or stick...

5/3/2017 10:10am OK I'll swap to 40:1. Is it alright to leave the 50:1 in there for now and then swap to 40:1 when (if) it starts getting ridden, or should I change that before? I was getting help on here some months ago about this bike because it was blowing heaps of smoke, I replaced both crank seals back then. The...

5/2/2017 8:54am Do you put some oil on everything when you have done this in the past? I've read that some people recommend it (which is what the manual says to do) and others are against it. Does it make much difference with the pw50? Can you confirm which way the head gasket faces, I'm guessing shiny side up?
Those...

5/2/2017 8:09am Previous owner had removed the oil bottle so it's running 50:1 premix.
Part of the bottom ring had also snapped off (unless it was installed broken) and disappeared. Hopefully the new parts are a nice improvement
