Have you looked into the possibility of an Osteotomy? I have one scheduled for this fall as I've destroyed most of the cartilage in my right knee from a combination of snowboarding and moto (ACL repair, tibial plateau fracture, general smashing). I am 43, so I'm a long way off of getting a full knee replacement but my surgeon says...
