89 CR500 FRONT END QUESTION

Has anyone ran into this before? The front wheel on my 89 CR500 is canted to the left when the bars are straight. The bars are brand new and straight, the steering stem bearings, wheel bearings, wheel spacers (inner and outter) are all new as are the internals in the forks. I work for a firearms manufacturer and I had the quality control department check out the forks and axle to make sure they were straight and they are. The front wheel is true and the frame is straight. The wheel is canted to the left about an inch and a half. I'm at a loss on this one. Any ideas?????

Have you tried loosening the axle clamp bolts and pumping the fork ups an down 3 or 4 times. Put back on the stand and torque all the bolts.
Is the offset of the rim to hub correct? Check with another of your Honda wheels, they should be quite similar. Take the wheel out lay it on a flat surface and measure from the surface to the rim check against another.

More than likely the forks are twisted in the tripple clamps. Loosen the bolts some, stand with the front wheel between knees looking back at the bike twist the handle bars until straight. Tighten the bolts and you should be good.

Yeah thats what I figured the first time I put the bike back together after restoring it so I did exactly what you said, however if I take the wheel off and go to put it back on it does the same thing. I would not think I should have to do that everytime I take the wheel off. ??????

Check lower triple clamp is not bent. rare, but does happen.

Next step would be to check straightness off lower fork tubes. Take the front wheel off and spin the bottem of the legs 360* and check for forward and back motion. Then check axle by rolling on flat surface. Then pull apart the tripple clamps and inspect those.

Wait I just reread your post, does the 89 have rubber mounts for the handlebars. These sometimes get crushed and cock the handlebars while everything else is straight. Check the alignment of the bars with the top clamp.
