I'm just guessing but this has been cracked for awhile and finally just broke loose.

My stock front rim on my 04 YZF did that. Pretty sure they were D.I.D though. Gotta be something with the Aluminum they're cast out of I'm thinking.

I bought the bike in November and have been practicing on it since, (Supercross only). I guess I have to figure out how to get some A60's for outdoors.....Anyone know where I can get some wheels for a good price?

I just landed onto a Triple-on ( to a tabletop ) at milestone and the back wheel completely locked up. No rocks at all.

I've seen it on a mountainbike - Almost identical looking break, but I've never seen that on a motorcycle.

I did have a rear hub completed explode on a 5-month old, 1986 KX250. Spokes were tight and the thing was ALWAYS maintained and checked over. My dealer sent it back to Kawi - Canada and it was warrantied with no questions asked.

10 years as a Parts and Accessories Manager I had a lot of broken shit thrown back over the counter, including rims, but I have never seen a rim THAT bad.

Like 500 said it was probably cracked but I have never seen pieces of a rim break away like that.

I can tell you though that the Excel rims used in OME production are not the same Excel rims you buy over the counter. But I'd stick to the A60's just for peace of mind. I'd still let Excel know and see if they can 'upgrade' you to A60's Wink

Keep us informed on how you go.

That rim was cracked long before that happened. My son rode pretty hard and fast over the last ten years and we've had a lot of new bikes from 80's on up. I can say I only noticed it with the original stock rims.I agree with MCfan4life that the OEM Excel rims are not the same as the aftermarket ones, as I have replaced all the cracked rims with aftermarket Excel rims and did not experience the problem with any of them. What happens is that tiny cracks develop from the spoke holes and work their way out to the edge.At the beginning they can be hard to detect. You have to look closely when you wash your bike or tighten the spokes. When I saw the cracks developing the first time,I made it a point to check for this condition every time on all his bikes, all the time. If you find this condition and you or your son race or ride hard,or if you are a fast rider, you will put a lot more stress on the wheel than just some guy riding in a field for fun. The condition progresses exponentially. You MUST replace the rim before riding the bike to avoid a possible serious injury.
