As they say dress for the crash, not for the ride. My brother Nick and I both run Shoei VFX-W's, my dad has an Arai, and my brother Chris has an old Bell Moto 8 that is also falling apart. The main shell is fine, just the vent covers break and fall apart.

Three pages in and no ones said it yet!

If you have a $10.00 head buy a $10.00 helmet.

My number one rule is to only buy a helmet that I can try on. A perfect fit is extremely important and you can't get a perfect fit if you can't try the helmet on. A perfect fitting helmet will feel almost too tight. With a bit of time it will break in and be just right. If it's too loose, whats the point of wearing it?

understand how it's made...

Don't buy a plastic shell, ( too hard they bounce your head results in neck injuries)

Woven shells ( fibrglass or carbon) absorb more energy from a crash (the more carbon less weight more $$$$)

Read the link that mtnr posted and you might not be so convinced.
My opinion isn't based on a single study ( that article was published 6 yrs. ago ) I READ IT BACK THEN ...
As the article said there is alot of debate Snell, ECE, DOT.
( when I look at any study my 1 st concern is who funded it, not the results.) understand the money trail and you will understand the results better.

It is based on a lifetime of experiences, such as trained athletic therapist, 40 years of racing experience, training from helmet manufacturers.

I have seen many times over the years Pro riders take Shoei or Arai stickers off helmets that they have bought with their own money and apply their sponsored companies stickers.

Oh, and to add to my post above, I am a big advocate of helmet quality. Every helmet in my family's trailer is either a Shoei or Arai. I have seen many people get knocked out because of their helmet. I have even seen one of my friends go into a coma wearing a SixSixOne helmet and can't ride anymore. I know no one ever plans on crashing, but crashes happen and why not take every safety precation you can to help you get back on the bike.
yeah, because aria worked out so well for broc hepler...

Most helmets that meet DOT and Snell standards provide very similar levels of protection. Similar to cycling helmets, the extra cost comes from lightweight components, venting, and R&D. Most of the "cheaper" models are simply using 2-3 year old designs, often a pass-down from designers like Arai and Shoei.

You could perform a "blind" helmet test, i.e. visit a shop with a large selection and try on the helmets blindfolded. This way you make your selection based on comfort and function, not the label. A well-fitted $150 helmet will provide much more protection than an ill-fitting $500 model.

Bingo, if it does fit properly, does nt matter if it cost $50 or $600.

^^^^^great idea and good advice, the only thing I forgot ( no edit)

after a big crash I have found riders are much more likely to replace a $ 300 helmet VS a $ 1000 helmet

That is a big deal too, good point!

After a big crash, you should replace it. Most people won't replace that Arai or Shoei because of the expense. Plus, they think the helmet is so well made that it should be ok.

i would than get a plain white or black Shoei VFX-W, one of the best helmets and you should be able to get for under 400. It won't have the fancy paint job but last I checked paint is for looks not protection.

Hepler was wearing a HJC when he had his head injury. After that, he wore an Arai with HJC stickers.
