Greenland Deal

I thought we were just invading to take the resources or something, but it appears those folks of superior morality were wrong again.

"Representatives from all three countries went through "various rounds of quiet negotiations that never leaked and never got out there" starting in February, as Denmark and Greenland came to see the agreement as serving their own security interests."

"They recognize at the end of the day that they have a national security concern here as well," Rubio said. "Denmark and Greenland understand that they don't have the financial means necessary to defend Greenland if it were to come under attack or be threatened. The United States has the power to do that."

Comparison of Key Differences

FeatureThe 1951 Defense PactThe New Framework Agreement
Primary ScopeStrictly military and defense; focused on Cold War containment, building radar hubs, and establishing bases (like Thule).Multilateral and strategic; expands military access while adding broad economic, resource, and Arctic strategy components.
Mineral & Economic RightsNone. It carried no provisions for economic access, trade, or natural resources.U.S. priority and extraction rights for rare earth minerals, gold, iron ore, and zinc without needing standard permits.
Geopolitical Vetoes & RestrictionsAllowed access to NATO allies but did not explicitly restrict or ban adversaries from non-defense operations.Strictly bars non-NATO adversaries (specifically China and Russia) from acquiring mining rights, economic investment, or military footholds.
Sovereignty & ControlRespected Danish control, keeping U.S. actions limited to designated "defense areas" with Danish oversight.Secures expanded or sovereign control over designated zones, giving the U.S. greater unilateral veto power over major investments.
Financial ResponsibilityU.S. funded its own bases but did not alter the broader economic relationship between Denmark and Greenland.Denmark retains its annual block subsidy (~$600 million) to support Greenland's infrastructure, sparing the U.S. from the direct financial burden of governance.

From what I've been able to find....  they have not released the entire agreement so speculation.  The previous agreement had no expiration date. it was for as long as the 2 countries lived up to their parts of the agreement.

I'm not sure if its new or not, but they point out the  new agreement   bars non US allies from investing in sensitive infrastructure.  There was an updated version of the 1951  agreement made in 2004 that addressed some more modern concerns.

After I read that the details of the new agreement had not been made public yet I stopped trying to find out what's different and what's the same.  Its hard to know if the claims made about stuff being new or even in the agreement are true just based off of quotes from the president , given his  love for " joking" about stuff like this.   If it is truly something that makes everybody safer and isn't costing  billions, that's great and I'm happy to see it happen.

When Ukraine wanted to join the EU and NATO, we were told that expansion was bad and a provocation.

Also....are all of our nukes in Washington DC?

Umm, I believe it is showing how DC is targeted via Russian ICBM bases not the other way around.  I also believe it shows how Greenland is in the middle to defend against such action.

Maybe if Mayor Pete put it in a "Zinn diagram" it would be more understandable.

So it's 19 sites to nuke DC? That seems like 18 too many, but have at it, everyone hates the federal govt anyway. The left because trump and the right because taxes.

🤣🤣🤣 geez.... I sincerely hope you don't make a living from something that requires VISUAL INTERPRETATION,  like reading maps or plans 🤣

The usual crowd losing their shit over Trump's Greenland rants.....do they know that the USA physically occupied Greenland on 8 April 1940, after Germany invaded Denmark?

Wanna guess why?

Answer: to prevent Germany from building bases on the island and control the North Atlantic shipping routes. The US military built 14 bases on Greenland and captured  several small German installations on the east coast -- weather and radio stations for the U-boats.

Guess who won "The Battle od the Atlantic"?

In those days, attacking any country over the North pole, even flying over it, was not an option. Now, it is. Obviously the Danes know more about 20th Century history than the anti-Trump crowd.

Trump HAS made some smart moves, amazing that he kept his big mouth shut about this one. Rubio and the Generals probably put a shock collar on him while it was negotiated.

Greenland is extremely barren and inhospitable with no deepwater ports, but many fjords. The weather is terrible -- it regularly goes from benign to zero-zero with 50 knots of wind in less than 30 minutes.

As in WW2, its value lies in weather observation and radio/radar stations, and the 3 airfields built by the US during the war which are VERY weather-dependent.

I've flown there, it's a harsh place.

I'm guessing Putin's threats in Europe woke the pacifist leftist Danes up and they flashed back to WW2. Realized the EU can't protect Greenland.

Some short memories out there. Magas were calling the dems hawks talking about how we needed to stay out of the russian invasion becauae they were scared about staring ww3. Reps held off sending weapons support to Ukraine for 6 months while dems were trying to send it. Now here we have magas thinking they were the dems in that scenario. It's friggin bizarro world out there...
