He may have been "going faster" in 2005/2006, but not necessarily "riding better".

If Freddie Spencer were to ride his championship winning GP bike from the 80's back to back with a MotoGP bike from today, he would very likely be much faster on the new bike. That doesn't mean he's a better rider now compared to then, however.
