It’s easy to complain about the idiosyncrasies  of family, until you don’t have any.

I come from a very small family, most of who all have passed.  The wife comes from a family that never ends... cousins, uncle, aunts... 2nd 3rd, 4th removed.  Our thanksgiving is now held at one of her nephews houses in Casa Grande.  It's immediate family, a nice 5-6 hour in/out gathering.  However, two weeks before every Thanksgiving is the annual family music shindig. Most everyone on her side plays some kind of instrument, or try's.  Mostly country, bluegrass, gospel, harmonizing and an elderly aunt that yodels.  Still amazes me how many relatives she has that show up for the git-together.  One thing for sure, there's never a dull moment.

I am not married (24 yo) but also come from a small family - our holidays are myself, my parents, and my maternal grandmother and aunt. Dad's side is disbursed all over the country (and world) with some rough history, so we never see them. Mom's side is mostly still in NY and NJ, but at this point they're 2nd cousins or 1st cousins once removed at the closest, so not necessarily very close family. Her father died when I was pretty young (he was a great man), and her sister never had any kids. I do love the family I have, though. But, I do envision myself marrying into a larger family which you've described - sounds like an absolute blast. I know many people complain about family drama, but the thought of having dozens of people automatically built into your life and having some importance to them is really cool to me.

^Yep, came to live with us for a little while - in my mind, maybe 3-4 months. It seemed to me like they felt it was their retirement plan, so after nearly 5 years and repeated requests for them to leave, I eventually had to evict them using legal means. It took 2 months to do even that. They disowned my wife and me after that and tried to drive a wedge between us and the rest of her family. It backfired on them when they wore out their welcome everywhere else, too.

WOW  this can’t be written in a TV drama series. I feel for you and your wife.My parents were taken to court by us, their first words to the judge when in the court room were “ we couldn’t choose who our son married “

In family court the party that instigated the court case are called applicants-us

The side that is required to appear are called respondents- my parents

We address them in conversations as the respondents

We are hosting the in-laws as well...it's going to be interesting...my MIL and my FIL are divorced (touch and go relationship...mostly go...but they have their moments)...my FIL-who is 80 years old, mind you-got married to a 27 year old MAN early this spring...(My FIL isn't rich...he's broke and dirt poor, I have no idea what this guy sees in him or is after?)...so they'll all be over Thursday (first time with the MIL, FIL, and my “step FIL” who is almost 20 years younger than me, will all be in the same room).  Plus my SIL, and her son, my BIL his wife and their two boys (and my wife and I and our 4 kids).  I honestly love them all...I kind of enjoy the awkwardness of it all, and secretly hope there is just a bit of drama to keep things interest (nothing major, I don't want relationships fractured...but I would enjoy a little awkwardness around the table.).

I get you!  And Nothing but excitement around here!  I’ll report back…for sure.  Like I said, I genuinely love all of them, and enjoy their company….I look forward to being with them all…a few awkward moments will just be icing on the cake for me!  Haha

Not to be nosey but was scrolling through threads and came across this one and got kind of curious how things turned out.  Reading it had all the makings of an eerily bad news story that the ends with, "then turned to gun on himself".  Just kidding hope it all went well.

I can't say that I truly "hate" many people, but my father in law is solidly in that category.  My mother in law isn't, only because she is already passed.  When my FIL dies, I am going to drink extra gallons of water so that I can piss on his grave just as long as possible.

But other than that........

I think it's time to put the kegerator to work for the first time in several years......!

It's been a pretty decent week!

I’m not judging , because there are certain things that could happen in my life that could get me there. I’m glad this is not the case for me. It’s just too bad, is all. 😞

Still don’t talk to my parents or sister.

Silence with parents since 2015

Silence with sister 2006

Last month I was visiting in a small town and was in a grocery store. The female respondant was in the same store. I paid for my goods and left as fast as I could.i heard she also had a stroke at the beginning of the year and doesn’t drive anymore. My sister was in a car waiting outside…..fuck what a day.

Haven’t lost any sleep at all

Your post is hard to understand.

Who is the female  respondents?

Your post doesn't make sense.

The respondent in the store was his mom, and she had a stroke.

Family dynamics can be tough. I have a brother I haven't spoke to for decades...
...I miss somethings about him and other things remind me that it is best I keep my distance...

But hating someone so much that you "air-it-out" in a public forum about pissing on that someone's grave...
...Kenny, you said you wouldn't judge, so I will...  ...that speaks to character...
...and that person should, in my opinion, have a look inward as to why he let's hate drive his life.

Others in this thread have let the tough family dynamics go and just put distance in between...
...a better approach, 'cause no matter how much some of our families can be tough to deal with...
...they are still your relations walking this planet and living their lives...
...again wishing death on family (and pissing on their grave) speaks to character.

I agree. And if you knew the history you’d probably flip your belief on which end of the character spectrum you think it lies on. It’s not based upon simple disagreements or petty arguments, trust me.

It’s none of my business about any details. Which is why I don’t want to be judgmental. It can be therapeutic to make statements like what you have in this thread about your father in law.
