GOT AN AREA QUALIFIER COMING UP THIS WEEKEND IN NORTH CAROLINA. MY RIDER ON A 08 CRF450R HAS PROBLEMS. SEEMS THE BIKE IS MISFIRING ELECTRICALLY OR SOMETHING. WE BELIEVED IT TO BE THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. WHAT HAPPENS IS WHEN YOU OPEN THE THROTTLE UP 1/4 OPEN THE BIKE POPS AND CRACKS AND WHEN YOU OPEN UP MORE IT DOES SAME AS WELL AS SPIT FIRE OUT EXHAUST. WHEN THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR IS DISCONNECTED IT DOES NOT DO THE POPPING/CRACKING ROUITINE. HAVE REPLACED THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AS WELL AS PULLED THE CDI UNIT OFF OTHER BIKE FROM MY SHOWROOM FLOOR AS SAME RESULTS. DO NOT BELIEVE THE JETTING ISSUE IS PROBLEM. SEEMS TO BE ELECTRICAL IN NATURE. GOTTA GET THE ISSUE RESOLVED SO MY RIDER CAN BE READY FOR THE AREA QUALIFIER.
HAS ANYONE HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE 08 450'S, AND IF SO, WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM? THINKING OF CONTACTING HONDA TECH, WHICH SEEMS TO ALWAYS HAVE TO GO AROUND THE BARN TWICE BEFORE TALKING WITH A HUMAN!!! OR MAYBE EVEN CONTACTING HONDA HOUSTON AS THEY SEEM TO HAVE GOOD RACE SUPPORT . OPEN FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS OR COMMENTS.
BY THE WAY, MY RIDER IS KNOWN ON THE BOARD AS NONE OTHER THAN THE ONE AND ONLY "HILLBILLY" THANKS!

I would suggest you call a Honda Technician...I'm sure you are not the first however, it's the first I have heard of this issue.

Hillbilly just got owned by his Honda Shop?
4/29/2008 6:02pm
just put the steering dampner back on, problem will go away.

how did this start doing it... just all of a sudden?

do a leakdown test... ex valves could not be sealing all the way... not just check the shimming... but do a leakdown

try swapping stators off a good known running bike.

try new gas

is muffler packing all blown out?

Why don't you just take it to the dealer?

Possibly a stuck hot start or an air leak somewhere or a very lean condition. have you added a pipe to it or any other mods? If you think it may be electrical than you should check the timing with a timing light.

I am the dealer!!! My shop tech's are street guys who are limited on the newer MX bikes. Running stock pipe, had a Pro circiut pipe on but have been runing stock exhaust. When spark plug is removed, looks like been running lean, have repositioned needle clip up and down, no difference!! May have to check exhaust seals, cannot quite put our finger on the problem but believe it to be electrical in nature, getting very frustrated at this issue. Hillbilly is very knowledgeable on the bikes and we are all just aggravated at this issue. Thanks for all the response and will keep ya posted if we find the cure.

Check the timing and exhaust seals. I bet that's where the problem is. Also check the hot start slack.

I had a similar problem, my carb had some very fine grime in the top, where the needle clip is. I also found the slide was making scrapping noises when It would slide up and down. I cleaned it out really well. Turns out something wasn't seating right. Granted my bike is no where near new, so this probably isn't your issue, but its worth a look.

I would start with the head pipe gasket and check for cracks in the exhaust. If that doesn't seem to do anything check the slide on the carb. and make sure the two piece slide is inserted correct.

Yep, an airline crack in the head pipe could cause that!! I would know!! LOL!

Although my crack was very small, the bike was still running decent but was obviously popping more.

The TPS bolts onto the carb with a single bolt, and the TPS has a slot in it. Loosen the bold that holds the TPS on the carb and make sure it is centered on the bolt. This is usually the stock position for the TPS. I had a similar problem on my 06 YZ250F and this turned out to be the issue.

I also agree with some of the other posts...could be a timing problem or a bad stator. I have seen people put engines together and move the cam one tooth in either direction, which can cause this problem

It could also be an air leak somewhere. Check to make sure you haven't lost your fuel/air mixture screw. This can also cause popping and spitting. Hope that helps.

It was probably a defect fresh outa the factory or the guys at the dealer didnt properly set up the bike and messed up its timing which caused it to leak either too much air or too much gas causing it to backfire...

Have you also tried posting your question on thumpertalk.com in the CRF450 forum? Might want to give that a try.

as the dealer dont you have the authority to call honda head quarters? You must have a contact to Honda the general public doesn't.

When I had trouble with my bike I over thought the problem and it was just a fouled spark plug. Put a new plug in and see how she responds.
