So, I recently picked up a stripped 2004 CR250R frame with a clean title. It came with the original airbox, fuel tank, and subframe, but that's about it. Everything else I'll have to source—and I quickly learned that CR250R parts are expensive, but I'm committed at this point.
I also have a blown-up 2006 CRF250R that I wasn't planning to rebuild. When the CR frame popped up for sale, I figured it was the perfect excuse to build a 2-stroke instead.
My biggest question is whether the CRF parts will swap over to the CR frame. Specifically, can I use the swingarm, brakes, triple clamps, forks, wheels, etc. from the 2006 CRF250R, or are there major compatibility issues?
I'm also trying to figure out which years of CR250R parts are interchangeable. I've already noticed that the CDI and wiring harness are different between the 2003 and 2004 models. What other year-specific parts should I be aware of?
If anyone has any 2004-specific CR250R parts they're looking to sell, let me know. Thanks!
You can utilize parts from the 06 crf -
Triple clamps, front wheel, forks and front brake can be swapped directly over. Forks should be revalved and sprung for the 2 stroke and you should verify fork length matches or is close to the CR. But they were both twinchamber 47mm showa fork bikes with 24mm offset triple clamps.
Foot pegs and brackets should be able to be swapped. Not sure of rear brake pedal.
Swingarm - this one I’m 90% on, I believe it can be used BUT crf is about a 1/2” shorter. If you do use it you will need to also use the Crf shock (should be revalved and sprung for 2 stroke as well), linkage and end bell to work properly. The rear wheel and brake would work but verify that sprocket aligns properly with counter shaft sprocket.
As you said, cr parts are pricey. I would expect a 02 through 07 complete cr motor and ignition package to be between 1500-2500 depending on year. That era of cr250 motors are getting more difficult to find parts for, especially power valve related items. I would recommend doing some research on all the components you would need and establishing a budget you are comfortable with.
Not to discourage but I have yet to do a build where I didn’t go over budget or had difficulty sourcing parts.
I have noticed the market has loosened up a bit on complete/running cr250’s, with fair to good examples going for 3000-4000. You may want to consider selling the parts you have and putting that towards a complete bike to start with.
That being said, best of luck 👍 and if I come across any parts you could use I will reach out.
Also, you may want to move or repost this in the tech help section.
I would have to agree. It would definitely be cheaper to buy a complete bike. But knowing me, that 3k-4k would only get torn down and turn into a even expense project as well. I'm currently little into the parts I already have so, I'm playing it by part availability
Swing arm swaps over. You have to use the cr250r spacers. I have a 2009 crf250r swing arm on one of my 2004 cr250r’s. The shock does not swap over.
