From people that have ridden them. Are they powerful enough to keep up off-road with buddies? I'm a pretty experienced expert class rider my whole life. I grew up doing some off-road, but have always been mostly a track guy. With ca lame laws my bike isn't legal to ride off-road anywhere.
I was looking for a dual sport to get to work and back ( all city streets, no highway) and that I can take off roading when my buddies go. For the most part I am a better and faster rider than most of them. Just wondering if the klx can do serious trails and get around okay with some stiffer springs and opening up the air box/exhaust.
I'm trying to stay away from a high maintenance bike as much as possible. (I already have one of those)
Your friends will be so embarrassed watching you go up hills as they sit at the bottom on their $10k "Hard Enduro" bikes.
Please don't put them through that.
I rode a KLX250 before, can't imagine the 300 is much different.
It was heavy and low (less clearance for rocks and logs). For trail riding it'll be fine, won't excel anywhere but it'll get the job done.
Probably want to remove the lights and mirrors for trail use. I remember going up a hill and having the mirror hook under my helmet chin bar.
I think something like a Beta RS model would be more fun. It's a full sized bike with good suspension and brakes but also street legal and lower maintenance than a MX bike.

Yes, a KLX will get you around without a problem.
FYI, while it's nice to have new stuff, trail bike technology moves like a glacier so I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 2006 over a 2026 model, so long as it's in decent condition and has the plate you're after.
