Since you'll be in Gaslamp for the race: grab a couple pints of the black stuff at The Field, walk around Seaport Village, USS Midway (as everyone else has mentioned), The Del Coronado, then head over to Point Loma, check out the military cemetery, Cabrillo National Monument (great views), and if you're going to go north, La Jolla shores.

The race isn't at Petco anymore, it moved to Snapdragon a few years ago. All these posts recommending things that aren't even in SD are hilarious. Go hang at the beach, eat tacos, ride bikes, watch the waves or get in the water. Don't come visit San Diego and listen to people telling you to drive 2 hours to check something out.

Southbeach in OB, you'll thank me later.

What do you want him to do go to Hodads then OB noodle house then get wasted at sunshine company?

It’s ok just a little over hyped. Onion rings are about the same as you get from Red Robin.

Tacos at Southbeach - Mahi Mahi. Plus a good beer list and views of the waves.

Chicken Wings at OB Noodle. Plus another good beer list.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but my advice is SKIP Hodads.

Ah, that's right. The SDSU expansion project. Thanks for the correction. I agree it's funny how many people said drive way the fuck out here or out there! LOL
