The NCAA has ruled Newton eligible to play EVEN though they found evidence that his Dad solicited money in exchange for his commitment to play football.

FUCK the NCAA and what is the just the latest in their pandering to the SEC and the BCS.

athletics - at most BIG football / basketball programs schools....

I still love to watch 'em though....

Its a business above all else now. Similar to the NFL not suspending Andre Johnson this week , oh and hey what a coincidence his team is scheduled to play Thursday night on the NFL network.

Sitting in my docs office this morning i was reading a Si mag from Nov 15 that talked about what a scam the whole bowl game situation is and they outlined a pretty badass playoff bracket that would be awesome, but we will never see it because the Bowl $$ scam.

Not to rule out, the loss of power if it were strictly a playoff system. Right now, the powerhouses get preference even when they are having a bad year.

What's laughable is the obvious east coast (Read: SEC) bias in journalism.

When the Reggie Bush accusations first came out, he and USC were labled cheaters in print and on the radio... daily...because his parents were woood by an agent and lived in his house rent free for a year.

And they're still talking about it 5 YEARS LATER for a bunch of he said she said. Before you get all gung-ho on Bush, he aint the first and won't be the last that recieved shit from agents, just one to be made example of.

At the very least, Newton deserves some shit for his proven academic cheating at Florida!

On a side note: Division 1A ball is larger than the NFL and brings in more money. Networks and Universities are making millions off of these kids. Why the fuck can't they talk to agents? Who's protecting the interest of these 18-22 year olds? Sure many agents are scumbags, but at least they look out for their investment...more than you can say for the Uni's or the NCAA.

that's a pretty fair statement if you ask me. I'm not fan of agents, but the bulk of the kids are used up and dumped at the end of 4/5/6 years.

Force the colleges follow the rules or shut the whole thing down, and start up a semi pro league like they had years ago.

Bullshit

This is collegiate athletics. The schools should either follow the rules in place, or shut their programs down. College is for academia, not preparing kids (some that have no business in college in the first place) for the NFL. Semi Pro leagues is an option, and that cost could be put on the backs of the NFL, rather than our universities, that receive both federal and state taxes.

BTW: Not all college athletic programs make money. In fact, there are questions about if books were kept as in a normal business manner, IE building and stadium cost for construction and maintenance, repairs, utilities, debt service etc, a good number of them don't make shit. I know that some of the big sports fans here say different, but if that's the case then why does the tuition, and student fees go up every year at these big power house college's?

jmar do the kids that work in bookstores, as Equipment managers, AV depts, commons, library, as TA's ect... get paid? Why not the athletes who people are actually paying to see?

Its just bullshit and another way for the Director of the BCS Members, the NCAA and ESPN to do what they what when they want to and circumvent labor laws in this country. NCAA Sports is a multi billion dollar enterprise that people are getting rich off. And it not the athletes.... I say lets cut the bullshit and pay the athletes!!! Who really thinks they go for school pride and a education anymore? It's all about the pro's. In medicine the universities used to rape residents the same way not but any more.

I don't buy into that. The reality is, the kids working in the bookstore, or any other part of the campus actually belong in college. They also don't get paid hundreds of thousands to sign on the dotted line. The kid at the book store has to keep his grades up, or drop out. Same can't be said for some jock that shouldn't even have gotten out of high school, let alone getting passing grades from a major university.

Simple question here?

This years supercross series, had two of it's major stars sitting on the sidelines. Did it affect the racing?

No it didn't, it was one of the best years ever. Make everyone follow the rules, the playing field will be level, college sports will still be entertaining, and our tax dollars will not be funding colleges that place more of an emphasis on athletics than they do academics.

A few things to consider -
1. The investigation by the NCAA into Newton is open and ongoing.
2. The NCAA has ruled that Newton is eligible....FOR NOW. That could change.
3. Newton's dad tried to solicit money from Mississippi State.....but Cam went to Auburn instead and there's no proof money ever exchanged hands. YET.

Is Mississippi State an NCAA college?

That tells me he broke the rules.

BTW: His eligibility should have over with after getting caught cheating on three different occasion's at FL. He left because he was going to be expelled. Again, FL is also an NCAA school.

I normally just lurk on here, but this is a subject that bothers me.

As far as I know, Jmar is right. I go to the University of Southern Mississippi, and this subject has came up a few times in our school newspaper. I believe they stated that $300 dollars per semester of our tuition goes towards the athletic department. Our tuition also goes up a few hundred dollars every year. This may be different at schools with better athletic departments, but I thought I would give an example.

Do your state and federal taxes go to 13 year old mini stars?
Are these kids representing a public university when they race?

Ok then with this logic I'm sure you would welcome the elimination of any aid or program that helps students get into school.

The problem is that these athletes are usually majoring in something that does them no good upon graduation. They're banking on going pro. Most I know are interdisciplinary studies majors. They're just taking a bunch of random classes. The athletic scholarships aren't helping to bring in people who otherwise wouldn't be educated. They're just recruiting athletes.

This is one thing I would like to actually see congress get involved in.

Mainly because I could care less about college sports of any kind but would welcome the distraction because everything else they try to fix turns into a monumental clusterflop.

Imagine how it will go when you have experts in taking kickbacks and payoffs like politicians working to eliminate them for some one else

IRONY!!!!

Oh, and when they get done with fixing the BCS, maybe they can move on to something equally important, like eliminating the anti trust exemption for professional baseball or mediating the next pro players strike

All I want to see is that they play by the rules, and I don't want some half wit jock attending our major universities. If these guys can't actually hold up to the academic standards that everyone else has to, then they have no business being there.

I know your college educated, and this should really piss you off. I myself am from the school of hard knocks, and I just happen to be very good at what I do and was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I understand what a privileged it is to get a good education, and I hate to see our higher education system turned into a training facility for the NFL or NBA.

Jim the athletes never pissed me off mostly because I was one. The quota system used to determine acceptance really pissed me off though. You would be shocked how many people got into school over more qualified applicants. However, the lessor applicants that were accepted usually failed out by year two so natural selection ended up working things out.

I am mostly disgusted by the double standards the ncaa supports and the assholes that run the bcs.

I am mostly disgusted by the double standards the ncaa supports and the assholes that run the bcs.

Jim the athletes never pissed me off mostly because I was one.

It's obvious that should have been there though. You graduated, and I am guessing that Physical Education wasn't your major. I have no issues with scholarship athletes that are smart enough be there in the first place.

As you already know, I am not a big fan of OU football, but I am a big fan of Sam Bradford. He was a great player, great kid and he was dam sure smart enough to attend college.

Guys like Cam Newton, and a whole lot of others, they have no business being there in the first place.

The irony is that the 100's of millions of dollars that the universities make on these kids tax free are the first to throw the kid under the bus if he gets free shoes or a free car from a booster. If the NCAA and these institutions are so worried about the integrity then why dont they give back the moneys they recieved during these athletes tenure at their colleges?

Example; Reggie Bush, was a star, was a major instrument in getting them to the BCS bowl multiple times and a national championship. They strip him of his heisman. Where is USC's repremand? Are they going to forfeit the money the college made from Bush filling the stands or bowl appearences or the apparel sales? Dont think so. I have a hard time when they focus on the athlete more then the crooks running the colleges.

I agree Jim. I attended and graduated a D1 school and I got no scholarships. There are alot of kids who dont belong in these colleges due to acedemics. However like a earlier poster stated they have no issue using and throwing away these kids every 3-4 years after they make millions off of them. There were 2 players that UM turned away this year that would have helped out defense tremendously but they couldn't meet academics. I believe Florida picked them up. Unfortantelythis is the way NCAA is, it is a buisness and as long as the few of them are making money it is good for them.

FUCK the NCAA and what is the just the latest in their pandering to the SEC and the BCS.
the biggest problem with this ruling is the precedent it sets for future cases...how many parents, from here on, will play the "it was me not my kid card"???

What is USC's repremand?

Since the NCAA couldn't prove Bush had any knowlege his parents were receiving gifts from agents, the NCAA put the hammer down on USC for "Lack of Institutional control"

A 2 Year Bowl ban
30 scholorships over 3 years
Had to vacate 14 victories in which Bush played
Juniors and Seniors were allowed to transfer without losing a year of eligibility

So Newton, a proven academic cheat, proof that dad was soliciting moneys and the NCAA found him eligible to play this weekend.

and that in a nutshell is what's fucked up with the ncaa. The sec/bcs doesn't want or need the pac 12, or the rest of of the"non-bcs" conferences out west. They are draining off money from the teams back east. Mark my words oregon is next in line for a ncaa beat down.
