Talk about a stroll down memory lane..... So many names I had not heard for decades brings back some great memories.

One thing I have wondered for a while- I recall Jesse James being a very fast pee-wee racer and saw his name in the results. Is that the same Jesse James that is now Mr. Sandra Bullock?

It's cool to see those '84 GNC results. Lots of names of guys I use to race with, and some that even still race. Dennis Daft and I attended the Gary Bailey school together in '81. Carrol Richardson, Craig Gullakson, Paul York and I raced together as 125 intermediates many times in '81 also. Jack Ricks is having a reunion coming up for us before the Dallas SX. My old buddy Clay Hoenshell still races. Texas MX legend Kirk Spencer still hauls ass too. He and I traded a couple of motos a few months ago at a local vintage race, which was a blast. Got a few pics of that race with Kirk.

Cool ... I'd love to see the results from the '83 Fall National. That was my one and only national title. Jack Ricks and I swapped moto wins that year, but I got the overall. However, I don't know who else was on the gate that day. I think Brian Swink was there, but I don't remember for sure. This is good stuff ... I sure miss the "Good Ole Days".

Any idea on what Dennis Daft is doing these days? It seems like I heard he bought Dennis Easter Yamaha in Lawton, OK. That was a long time ago though.

I haven't seen Dennis since the 80's. Jack is living in Waco and is in trucking. His reunion for oldschool Texas racers will be at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth the morning of the Dallas SX and it looks like many 80's era Texas racing legends will be there. 1983 NMA Yamaha Grand National Championships


Ponca City, OK. August 1-7, 1983


Mouse McCoy left his factory Honda ride in 1983 for a privateer DMC Kawasaki. He showed up at Ponca City with some serious speed. The all white Dave Miller built machine was fast all week. On his 83cc modified machine he set the fastest lap time of the week, in ANY classification. He was second low point man going into the 83cc modified class when he had to put his foot down at speed and broke it. McCoy was looking to end his major championship drought that had lasted since a 60cc Race of Champions win in 1979.



Also note that Craig Canoy raced a stock KX80 and a KX in the 105 class. But he raced a Honda in the 83cc Modified 12+ class. And how about Jesse James on the only Italjet in the field (at least top 10). And how did Mike Pascarella ever make that 83/84 Suzuki move? Especially in the STOCK class?!?

Cool, I see Bryan Abernathy got 3rd in 125 mod pro at Ponca '83 behind Paul Dennis and Eddie Warren. Bryan and I rode for the same shop in '81 and his battles with Danny Storbeck on 80's were a sight to see, with Abernathy usually ending up on top. He was poised to be one of the greatest racers ever from Texas until a broken leg at Whitney took the wind out of his sails. He was one of those kids that had never been hurt and that injury just seemed to kill his interest in racing.

I updated the 1983 Loretta Lynn's results, adding top 10 and top five in some classes after find the results of those (previously only had top three's). Scott Brown on a Suzuki? I do not remember this...I remember Kawasaki to Honda. I did not remember this Suzuki entranceat a national.

I rode suzukis from april of 1983 to the beginning of the 84 season..........It was a bad move to go from the 83 kawasaki to the 83 suzuki.........83 Kawasaki was a on bad ass machine........It was way ahead of everything else.....

"Without a doubt the Stock and Modified divisions of the 85cc (12-13) group provided the week's wildest racing. Whee-to-wheel battles involving up to four or five riders often lasted for the entire 20 minutes with frequent changes in the lead. Ronnie Tichenor, William Surratt, Kyle Lewis, Larry Ward, James Woolridge, and Scott Brown, each claimed a moto win. California's Surratt was the only rider to win more than one moto.

Going into the final Modified moto, Brown, Woolridge and Surratt were tied for first with six points each. Piloting a lone Suzuki, Brown passed Tichenor in the early laps and led the way. Eventually, Woolridge challenged Brown's point position in a tense winner-take-all dice. With three laps remaining, Brown was riding on a flat tire and got sideways over the scoring jump, causing Woolridge and himself to crash.

The crown was up for grabs and Tichenor took over the lead while Woolridge remounted in second. Surratt however, had built momentum in his charge back from last place and with two laps remaining, Surratt passed Woolridge to finish second and claim the title by one point ahead of Tichenor and Woolridge.

1985 65cc - Chris Carte.

I grew up with him; my brother and I rode with him all the time. That guy was such a talent that he failed to utilize. I remember him not riding for several years, and we went to Mt. Morris back in 94, he led his first moto until the last lap when Kevin Windham (rookie year) passed him. It was only because his conditioning was horrible. Man, I miss those days.
