I'll tell ya....I'd rather be a bit out of shape 'cause I'm "blowing" a day at the track freaking myself out with speed instead of riding a road bike until my nuts turn black and fall off.

What kind of food do you islanders eat? Is it mostly fresh? My bet it is. Probably tropical mix similar to Taiwan...and not big on dairy?

Man Ive got just the opposite problem. Im losing weight and Im not sure why. I have added some MTB to my training the past couple of months but at the same time I was not in the pool. So Im thinking the caloric burn would be a wash. Still Im losing. Im 6' tall and I got on the scale the other day and saw 148. And I eat like a pig, no make that 2 pigs, 4 meals a day. Lots of good food but I chase that down with lots of sweets too. You know its gettin bad when those skin tight spandex biking shorts are baggy.

Matt, I was going over your stats from Oceanside and I noticed a PC I think it was. Are you listed as some sort of Challenged Athlete? And if so what are the qualifying parameters? I know that you and I still have both our legs and feet but does one have to be an amputee to be a challenged athlete? Is the disibility rated by percent or something?

Good luck. Total? Do you use gear or raw? I just started front squatting but I'm having a hard time keeping my elbows up when I add weight.

Totally raw, no shirts, no suits, no belts, no straps. I'm doing a push/pull (bench and deadlift) meet. Should hit an 860 between the two, but we'll see. This cutting weight is killing me. I've lost nine pounds in four days. I've always been a strong bencher, but now I'm developing my squat and deadlift.

Good points actually.

What I save on food I spend on medicine. The fridge is half full and my food cabinet has camera bags in it. Smile

All BS aside, there is something missing in this discussion. Big people with bad thyroids have trouble losing because the weight itself changes things.

Working out for a big person with a bad thyroid is different than working out for a thin person with a bad thyroid. The weight causes "insulin resistance" and similar syndromes. Working out wears you down instead of building you up. You get hungry but your body ignores the food except for the carbs, triglycerides go up. The more you work out, the more tired you get, the more you eat, the more triglycerides.

When I was trying to MX my weight off years ago.. in six months of riding my ass off, 30 min motos, I lost exactly zero lb and my triglycerides were 16 times the high scale. And I was a light eater then too.
i agree! steve

and everyone here is proud of you that you have gotten in shape!

Thyroid has little to do with it. Well, conventional thyroid testing, just like Teefus and a few on here have said.
My wife has hypothyroid as do I. She is a slim, athletic little thing. I am a big man, with a bit of a beer gut right now. I ended up with Anxiety dissorder about 4 years ago. I think it was from shift work. Thats the only thing I can attribute it to. All of a sudden, my body couldnt control its state of rest or fight or flight. That made it almost impossible to excersice, cause my body would go into full adrenaline mode as soon as I would excersice, or try to take a piece of mama.
Then, here a month ago... BAM... it goes away. I tapered off the meds that werent really working anyways, and Its pretty much gone. Weird. The meds were KILLING my metabolism, and I have lost 10lbs in a month since getting off them. I just bought my 2008KTM 450SX, and am getting back into riding and racing. I have been running a bit, and my pants are getting lose. What did I do? Almost nothing. Something just switched back in my body.
Matt, I believe your intentions are good, and in alot of cases, you are right. People need to change. But, till you have walked a mile in someones shoes, you need to find a bit more humility. I admire your drive though, to recover from your injuries. Seriously though, you cant speak for others.

Okay, so we've had this discussion before. I am not gonna bag on people this time. I am however going to toss something out there to think about. I spent most of last week either laying in bed or hanging to the sides of my toilet. Anything I ate would pretty much instantly come out one end or the other of me for about 7 days. I thought it was food poisoning at first. Well, after day 3 I started to get a little worried. So, on saturday I went to the er. Doc said I had an "Instential virus" and sent me home. Said to come back if I wasn't better in a day or two. So, monday I was still feeling bad, actually had gotten worse. So, I head back into the er. Spent all day monday in the er. The reason for my illness? Well, turns out my thyroid went out the window and I have hypothyroid. Yes, that means my metabolism has slowed down and is a reason for my fatigue, nausea and odd weight gain when I am not training. My er doc looked at me, looked at the blood numbers and threw them in the trash. He said there was no way I could be as lean as I am with my thyroid that out of whack, so a little more blood pulled out, and back to the lab. Same thing. He kinda laughed a little and asked if I would come into the er for him and be a public service message. Doc says that anyone else he would see with numbers like mine would be 200+ pounds easily.

So, there's your proof that just because your thyroid is out of whack, or whatever other lame excuse you want to use. There pretty much just a copout for about 99.9999999% of the population.
Get back to us when you hit 40. Ought to be pretty fucking hilarious, bet you look like a walrus.

Madmax-

You just described adrenal failure, and shift work can cause it or make it worse. What people call a "beer belly" is probably a cortisol belly from running in full adrenalin mode. You are at risk for chronic fatigue syndrome too.

You need to see a dr like mine and "get yer shit checked."

I bet you need PEDs more than the guys on the track, and I'm not joking!

Half of my past weight probs were adrenal failure, and half bad thyroid medicine. That's why it was so hard to figure out. Thyroid drs don't like to look very far, and they blame the rest on you.

Last year, my shit was so wiped out I didn't get the "fight or flight" response much at all. A bike could nearly hit me and I would lean out of the way but hardly a response.

Now I've been on adrenal meds for months and replaced the hormones, and its coming back, but I have to be careful and avoid those situations. I don't think I could do laps on an MX track right now without ODing on that rush because it won't shut off.

I tell people "if you are going to piss me off tomorrow, tell me today so I know what pills to take."

Strangely, when I made the biggest jumps in weight was when I was in grocery management, working all three shifts in the same week.......

The folks at Holtorf talked a little about that, how your body makes hormones at night (for a regular sleeper) and that getting less sleep interfered with that process. Not having a "set" sleep schedule is brutal, they said, and over time can basically shut your body down when it comes to making the hormones it needs.

I don't think I get as cranky now that I have the cortisol replacement for some reason. It takes more to piss me off than it did!

I can manage my weight pretty well with diet and exercise. Having said that I suffer from pituitary issues (un-determined at this point... endocrinologist appointment next week) that have contributed to fatigue and loss of motivation as well as some physical factors.

Low test and normal FSH (usually if test is low then FSH is high) are the biggest noticeable issues but have not found the cause... yet.

Interesting....

That's why my dr at Holtorf is on my ass to sleep using Melatonin, its a hormone too.

That's why Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is associated with this.

I was asking Jeff Spencer years ago about what he does and one thing he said, without revealing much detail, is he watches his riders every day, including when they travel, etc to make sure they plan for enough rest. Those guys are way ahead of us!

Good luck. You sound like one of the people that needs PEDs more than the riders do.

Smile

This thread started with young Matt saying "look at me, I am young and kicking this problem's ass.." and here us old guys are comparing notes on ailments like grandparents at a family reunion.

I guess it works. I would still be 300lb if I wasn't whining about nothing working on Mototalk. Someone who had been to Holtorf sent me a PM about where to go and what to do, and that changed everything.

I thought melatonin was snake oil, til I used it!

I try to only use it if I really need it, even though they say there is not "dependance" issues with it, but I probably use it 3-4 nights a week if I feel I am going to have a hard time going to bed. It works!

I used the melatonin that they sold me at Holtorf at first, but then saw just about every drug store around had it on a "buy one get one" sale and stocked up on it. About $5 a month is what it works out to.
